bah, just raise the front of the car to drain and fill. i did this like a month and a bit ago. works beautifully now. i had jack stands on the front jack points raising the car approx 2"-2.5". enough for me to get under and open the drain plug and take the fill plug off.

the fill point is where the speedo cable attaches.

unscrew the speed cable
undo the 10mm bolt that holts the speed cable gear in place,
after a bit of swiviling and forcing it will pull out and it will be a little plastic gear.

where you pull this out is where you fill it up. Basically fill it up to the top without it overflowing. If your car is sohc it'll take like 2.4L from memory, and if its dohc its 3.2L approx

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

Does this thread (draining/changing transmission fluid) also apply with the automatic BA hardtop?

My gear changes are feeling notchy and giving resistance lately, so should I assume that it's time to change the gearbox oil?

dunno, but i did it yesterday, took the same time as an oil change, but way less time for the oil to drain, cost around 40 bucks for a 4ltr bottle of trans oil. mine needed doing so decided id do it and was easier than i expected... 1 tip: get heaps of rags and or paper to put down, spent more time with the degreaser than actually doing the change!

im not sure if the gearbox in a BJ protege is identical, but mine took around 3.something litres.
1.8l engine too if that matters
the fill hole is around 7o'clock if u face the drivers side (front part of gearbox, lower quarter)

Just did this today and the box took 3L of oil. The old oil came out a mixture of really dark red and brown at one stage as well. No silver swirls thank god.

Sorry to resurface a old thread but what oil should I be using? 75w90? Can it be a ATF? I mean I have absolutely no idea what's recommended for the BA

your user manual has what is recommended to use in it.

ATF is for autos.

A GL-4 SAE 75W90 will be fine. Do not over fill it either. 2.4-2.7 liters is all a F series needs. Rotating cogs will plash around the oil inside. 3.0L or too full will just offer more rotational resistance inside the gearbox.
