Wink Newbie, no car, have questions :)

Hi guys,

new here to the forums, and to Mazda. Having just sold my HONDA CRV, I'm in the market for a cheaper/smaller car, that's hopefully a bit more fuel efficient.

I've narrowed it down to a couple of makes, but leaning slightly more towards the Mazda due to availability & good feedback. I'm really hoping to get as much info from you guys

*One of the cars I'm planning on checking out is a Manual 2002 Mazda 323 SP20 BJ II-J48 (VIN JM0BJ10S200215860), which has almost 250k on the clock... is there anything I should be wary of with a car with that many K's ? They're asking $3k (which is my max budget, but thinking all prices are negotiable), what would something like this be worth ?

I also read about a known issue with the VICS butterfly valve causing mayhem. http://www.astinagt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5441
Assuming the owner(s) haven't documented it happening, is there anything I can look for to see if this issue has happened ?

* Another car is a 1.6L 2000 Mazda 323, not as powerful as the 2.0L I'm sure, but how much more fuel efficient would it be? This one also has about 152k on the clock, which is significantly less than the SP20, but asking $2600

VIN - jm0bj10m100115957
Engine - zm340819
-----------------

There's also a couple of others, I wont go into detail, but is there anything I should be wary of? any particular model engine/323 I should avoid? any that are much better than the others and should be seriously considered ?

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to reading through the forums

As with any 2nd hand car, recorded service history will help. Specially if over 2K's. If you're mot a mechanic, then a pre purchase inspection will help you decide.

If the SP20 has done 250K's, then I wouldn't worry about any VICS issues. If it was going to happen, it would've happened by now. Not an issue IMO.

BTW, this forum is not very active it seems. Almost a ghost town sometimes. All the "young ones" are on Facebook apparently.

Thanks Jazzy . Yeh I noticed it's a bit quiet around here, even some other forums, to me, seems rather silent.. maybe just me though

I enquired at a couple of places, but pricing seems to be $275 - $375 for an inspection...which is a good chunk of my budget. Granted, that would save be from buying a lemon, but at the moment, I've been doing as much research as I can before heading out to inspect.

With the VICS issue, someone's said they've had it happen at 280k's, don't know if it's exactly due to the VICS issue or other, but what's your opinion on just removing the butterfly valves anyway ? Would there be much of a performance difference ?

Thanks
