My Astina was originally purchased brand new from West End Mazda, I'm the second owner and bought it from a used car lot right next door on Parramatta Road..

Out of all the Mazda dealers in Sydney I paid a visit to, I thought Hornsby were the best and hence ended up buying my SP20 from there. West End were good too, Tom Kerr was alright, but the rest I went to were very average IMO (Artarmon, Waterloo, Brookvale).

So its good to see Hornsby and West End rewarded for their good service.

Although this may actually mean something related to what it should represent, it means very little to me.

Take for example a well known japanese new & second hand dealership in melbourne's west.
Has was year after year of "Dealer of the Year " awards. Several friends of mine have bought new cars from there & they throw in a set of mudflaps or a tank of juice if they complete the survey in a "glowing fashion".
Even if the service was good, doesn't mean their mechanics aren't rogues (not that I am saying that, as I've never has a service there).

Get what I am trying to say?

yeah, my mum bought a 96 barina from garry warren smith, and on its complimentary service (it was second hand-bought two years ago) they said that it needed a new steering box.

after considering this for a week or two, mum took it to a local mechanic who took a look and found that it needed power steering fluid! now wouldnt they have found that in the service?

no disrespect to the dealerships as such, but their is alot to be said of some of the workshops, and their" Factory Expertise"

I would take a secondhand car to a dealer for it's first service, they've seen the cars before and know where all the parts should be. Dealer solutions can be a little expensive, hence the awards for selling parts.
You'll always hear stories of dealers (every brand) charging too much or doing work that wasn't required, to their defence for the dealership to sell the cars the service department needs to toe the line with the manufacturer service schedules.

My mechanic has a (platonic) relationship with my car and doesn't do anything without explaining it to me first and getting my go-ahead.

Theoretically they should all do that. I used to have the guys at Bill Worner Mazda in Mittagong NSW ring me if anything was sus on the car. I remember when i asked them to have a look at my central locking as it wasn't working with the remote. They took the trim off and thought that it was a burned out motor and told me how much it would cost.. About 30 minutes later they rang back and said that a wire had just come loose. Money saved, happy camper.

I've since built up a good raport with the head service guy down here in Ballarat, so he now looks after my car.

well apparantly that thing was judged on the service departments also....

but remember the service department in most places are run as a separate business, and they too have to make a buck... hence fault finding at hornsby mazda costs $80 an hour, plus parts, plus labour....

not saying i know better than the dealer, but i've never found a good mechanic... they always stuff something up.... must just be me

Well I bought my Astina from Grand Prix Mazda, the only Brisbane one listed, last October, great price and great service. I saw the add in the local paper last week, must admit, the dealer principal did not look comfortable in the black suit and tie.

No the Capella was bigger and had a 1500, or in the rotary version it was called an RX2, I have put in an Avtar which will give you a glimpse. The 1300 has the same basic body as the original R100 just a bit younger and 2door sedan
