car shakes when stopping

Hi,

My astina is model 98 4cyl 1.8. It shakes quiet alot when I stop at the traffic light etc. But when i drive it feels normal. If i put neutral on when I stop at the traffic light the car stop shaking. Could someone explain what is wrong with my car? Can it be fix? Or that's normal.

does it shake as you are stoping or when you are stopped. is it auto or manual. if it shakes as you are stoping its most prob shock abosrbers. if it shakes when you are stoped in drive(auto) it could be engine mounts, it could be idle controll it could be number of things. someone else here will provide better explenation

Auto or manual?

I'd say your front and/or rear engine mounts are torn and need replacing. If they are, they let the engine move around a lot and cause a fair bit of vibration.

MY car is auto. Yeah, it shakes when my car is stopping or when i start to brake.

I just replaced the front and rear engine mount like a month ago. I thought it helps but it didn't. I can't figure out whats wrong with it.

Maybe your idle is too low? How many RPM on the tachometer does it idle at?

hmmm i don't pay attention on that. I don't much about it. What's the normal RPM on the tachometer does it idle at. I will check it out this afternoon.

should be about 800 rpm at idle but when its just started and the engine is cold it can idle anywhere up to about 1400 rpm.

Its also normal for it to be at about 900-1000 rpm when you begin idling and then drop to 800 after a few seconds.

what if the idle is too low? Do i have to change the idle up a bit to prevent it from shaking?

I think its a idle issue. Idle can be changed using the idle adjuster screw on the throttle body. But before you do that you need to put the ECU in to diagnostic mode by shorting TEN to GND at the datalink connector (near the fuse box in the engine compartment). This link will show you a diagram

does it shake faster when you brake at high speeds? it could be a warped brake disk thingo so it brakes hard then soft as the wheel rotates (this happened to my mate)

if it shudders whilst braking isn't that like warp rotors or wheel balancing??

then its as everyone else said. sorry for the confusion i just read it as it shudders when you are stopping, i thought it might be breaking. myn does that as well. i think it might have something to do with the brakes booster using the vacuum from engine to work.. valve might be farked

so that means When u put it to drive, the engine is loaded a little which drops the rev enough for you to notice the shake & vibration! what happens when you put it neutral and turn the aircon on?? idle drops and comes up again or remains low ?
