wierd problem

hey all! i have a 2001 astina 1.8 and it is really ****ting me. l0l. well when i stop at traffic lights or anywhere where the car is idling after about 15-20 seconds of normal idling it drops revs almost conks out then revs its ass up to about 2500rpm n idles properly for another 15-20 seconds and does the same thing again and i do not have a clue why. its really bad on hot days especially if i have the air con on and then turn it off but if i let da car idle with the air con on it idles nicely at about 900rpm. can someone please tell me what the problem is??????

most likely spark plugs or wires
but it's only 2001 shouldn't be that quick...

vacuum.

check the air lines going to and from your engine around the intake manifold. it's a common prob with the yanks

My mates 98 626 was doing the exact same thing nearly stalls with air on! I sprayed brake cleaner around the injectors in the manifold and the rev's went straight up! It was the intake manifold gasket! So I replaced it! Now it goes like a rocket again with heaps better fuel economy! Easy job! When u get to the Egr nut, get a adj spanner and hit it with a hammer! It can be a bastard!

I have found a lot of the time the manifold 12mm bolts & nuts are pretty loose from factory (same with the exhaust manifold nuts) So it would be worth everyone with these type of engines to get ur spanners out and tighten them to prevent future problems! This is what happens when KIA assembles our engines!!!!! :x So check every nut and bolt!

u might start ripping threads with that method. a better way is to soak it in wd40 and let it soak in overnight

Biggest risk would be not using the correctly fitting tools or too much force, hire a torque wrench, about $20 for half a day, and tighten them to the factory spec.

A friend had a late '60s Alfa Berlinetta and needed tightening on a monthly basis

If ur not a mechanic with all the correct tools u shouldnt try and do it! I found 2 nuts missing of the exhaust manifold with another one about to fall of another stud! and all the others were loose! Not even close to factory torque spec same with the intake manifold!

U should not need to tighten these nuts on a monthly basis! The copper washers should crush but not come loose for a fair time!

I agree with a '60s car though due to the design & vibration!

i changed the spark plugs and still does the same thing so it surely wasnt that. they needed changing anyway. As for the air lines theory wat exactly am i looking for? And aslo the air flow meter what am i looking for there?

Your trying to find an air leak, a good way to do this is listening for a slurping/sucking sound. I'd grab a meter or so of garden hose, put one end to your ear (kinda like a stethoscope) and poke the other end around the engine bay while you listen.
