We can talk PCs and 323 mods down in Dorrigo mate. Personally, I have the PC bug in a big way. If I'm not trying to make them run fast enough, I'm trying to make them run cool enough.

Dam, that's a big OC. My Q6600 is a B3, not a G0, so no ultimate speed runs for me. Although I can software overclock it to 2900mhz on my featureless Intel mobo... My E8400 has seen 4000mhz, but never runs stable, but it might now with the new cooler. Failing that, it's the dam Asus memory bug, and there's nothing I can do about it...

Thanks, but naems. OC'ing is not something I do to achieve the highest figures possible, more so just something to do. Having said that, I wish my mobo wouldn't flake out when I run 500FSB... The memory is certainly up to the task. 7.5*500 and 8*500 cause the PC to have startup and reboot issues, even when it works, it generally has to think about it.

Damn. I should have bought the Q6700 over my Q6600. Mine is a later release with a 1.325vid I can only get to 3.4 stable with fair bit of volts. I also have a E8500 running at 4.0 stable. Both running on Asus P5e X48 boards flashed to Rampage Formula bios' and both on air. Just another bloody addiction I have

Hey Mal, what memory and multiplier/FSB do you run? If I run 9*445 on my E8400+P5E, I have no problems at all. But the moment I reduce the multiplier and run a tidy 500FSB, my board struggles to bootup and reboot.

I use 2x2GB of G.Skill DDR1000 Super Pi, and I don't touch the FSB strap voltages, or anything other than Vdimm and Vcore really.

I am running G.Skill DDR2 1100 PI 9*450 on the E8500.

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3208&p=1

After reading this article I didn't want to go for overall highest FSB I wanted a
lower TRD value so I have a TRD of 6 with a 6:5 divider with memory running at
DDR2 1080. Hasn't missed a beat.

At the moment its delegated to the bedroom media pc as I got sidetracked
playing with the Q6600. But as 3.4 is the best I can get the quad stable at
with 1.41v, I can see their roles being reversed soon and I can take some
benchmarks of the E8500 to compare if you wish.

I looked at some memory latency tests before buying my RAM, and DDR800/1000 was optimum for what I wanted. There is a small appreciable gain from running a fatter FSB, and you can consistantly repeat it on benchmarks.

I'd be rapped if I could get my B3 Q6600 up to 3.2 really. But I would need to replace the gay Intel board with something that has some adjustment.

I had only planned on getting 1066 memory but MSY were out (as usual) and it was only a bit
more for the PI 1100 so I thought what the hell. I have the option to go highish if I want.
Playing with the strap/divider can give huge results. After posting last night I played with
the divider and changed it on my quad pc from 3:4 DDR1132 to 5:6 DDR1020 and my Everest
Latency score dropped from 64.6ms to 58.4ms and Memory read increased from 8106mb/s to 8712mb/s

Doh: I never know when I am on a good thing. I was updating the quad pc this morning to put
in my bedroom so was updating windows, antivirus etc etc and decided to upgrade the bios.
I usually use the afudos via a bootable usb to update but like a goose I used the windows asus updater
and it failed on verify. 2 hours I tried in windows to reflash/recover/revert to old bios to no avail. This
pc has no floppy or DVD so I could not recover using those means. Finally I tried to use the bootable
usb but the board will not post at all. Tried the AMIBOOT recovery from both usb and CD to no effect.
Will scrounge up a floppy drive and see if I can recover that way. Otherwise need to seek professional
help with a replacement bios chip Damn motherboard is only 3 months old...

lol, I never expected astinagt to be loaded with overclockers!

I just spent the better part of yesterday organising parts for my girlfriend's new PC. So far the list is:
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L (dirt cheap but good)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 (2.5Ghz) 1333FSB
RAM: 2 x 1Gb Kingston HyperX DDR2-1066 (runs 800Mhz with 5-5-5-15 timings at 1.8v)
Video card: Gigabyte GeForce 9800GT 1Gb
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 320Gb 7200RPM (3Gb/s)
DVD: Lite-On 22xDVD/RW
Case: Huntkey Mercedes black
PSU: Huntkey true 500W silent

I wanted to get a Q6700 but as of about a week ago they're no longer stocked, so the CPU is a bit more expensive than I would've liked. I know there's better RAM out there, but this is the stuff I can get wholesale, and it won't ever be overclocked so it's much better value to go this route. The whole thing comes to a total of roughly $850 at cost price.

Eeek if its running 5-5-5-15 at 800 id hate to see what it runs at 1066 :/

For the DVD drive go Pioneer they have the best read/write strategies available. The Armed forces use them 105Ds from memory unless they updated recently.

Big Mal what are your normal timings? more specifically tRP if your ICs are decent then dropping the value to 3-4 should help a bit.

Doesn't particularly matter what timings it runs at 1066 as the 8300's fsb doesn't require it, and on top of that it'll never be going higher than 1.8v. Plus like I said, it's what I could get wholesale.

Thats fine, if your happy then thats what matters.

When i buy new gear first thing i do is drop the multi 1 or 2 and ramp the FSB up to stock speeds again. Much quicker
