Boost Squeal

Hey All,

Of late I have noticed a high pitch squeal when i get onto high boost (10psi) or high RPM...

Sorry about the quality, turn your speakers up...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0nkAS-TZCY

Eg: I can drive it in every gear and from 0-7psi the squeal isnt audible but as soon as i hit 8-11psi the squeal is audible.
It actually sounds like the PCM beeping or air blowing through a pin hole...

I can also have the engine at a high RPM with little boost pressure present (5000rpm/ 2psi) and the squeal will become apparent...could this be something on the inlet side?...

The noise started when or just after i installed my FMIC and the EBC, BOV etc hasnt corrected the noise.

ATM Im thinking its a small exhaust leak but Im not certain because the car hasnt lost any considerable amount of power recently...I also thought that it could be the actautor prematurely letting out pressure..

I also just had a CES 3" dump and Magnaflow cat fitted (after te noise appeared), they didnt report and suspicious exhaust leaks, nor did they test drive the car.....but they did say the S13 dump didnt fit my car, but the S14/ S15 dump did?....and the midnight mods dump had an elongated hole on the flange.....

Has anyone heard of this squeal sound with an exhaust leak, It doesnt sound like a metal to metal sound and if it was the turbo, wouldnt it do all the way though the boost range?...

Ive heard its common for the manifold/ head gasket to go?...Also the gearbox hanger wasnt attached before the CES dump was installed...

Chers,
john

doesn't sound like an exhaust leak, those are very distinctive

sounds like it kicks in whenever the car is sucking a lot of air, i'd look at the intake first

honestly, I can't hear it. What is the time on the video when its audible ?

how old is the turbo ? It could just be that there's some shaft play.
My old turbo was squealing loudly as soon as it got near or above 0 psi

Or it could be a bad join in the new intercooler's welding

When you installed the EBC did you do anything funny with the wastegate actuator ?

I can;t tell by the sound but its possible its just the wastegate opening. With the new boost control you may just not be used to it

hey mate,

it may be a loose connection in you intercooler piping, i had the problem once where there was a tiny bit of air escaping because one of my hoseclamps was only a tiny bit loose, maybe check them out.

The noise appears: 7 sec, 10 sec, 12 sec, 50 sec increments...

The foreman went for a drive and said in sounded like a tiny exhaust leak like the old BRAVO's use to have...

Its definitely on the exhaust side of the car.

Im gonna pull off my exhaust heat shield and give it a thorough look over...but gee turbo's get hot...

Kara: Its not that annoying, tells me when i hit 7-11psi or 5000rpm....Bahahahahaha

The Cat is only a week old (Magnaflow Steel 3") and is fine, the car does produce all the power...

Ive tightened up all of my IC piping clamps, could it be a vacuum line?...

Just went for a drive and found that if i sit on 5000rpm and produce 0psi nothing happens but as soon as i hit boost the noise appears...

Also tightened up my PB BOV and set the GP on the eboost II to 7psi, still the same result...

Vacuum leak is my bet. An exhaust leak would make it sound like a small truck.

Check for a split in a hose/join, not just a loose one.

A bit of a better recording

Its only started happening since the FMIC was put on (By me and a mate), so thinking it could be a pin hole in a silicon hose or something...

is that the squeal or a plane flying overhead?? damn that was loud
how come u got no manifold pressure at 5000rpm?(ugh i hate saying boost)
do you have a mechanical or electronic boost gauge?
cus if its mechanical the noise might be from the vacuum feed for the gauge. is it just as strong with the windows up?
just my 2c

^^^ EBoost II = EBC....

No plane, just my engine..lol...and the squeal...i dont have any boost pressure at 5000rpm because i take my foot off the throttle...ie, hold it so it sits neutral..

it maybe an idea to check you BOV because it if its adjusted wrong the spring may be too loose and that may allow the valve to open slightly (only a few mm) when the boost comes on and a small amount of air may escape.

just a thought...

if thats the noise DAMMIT MAN thats loud
hehe i thought u meant u dont get boost at 5000rpm
well this is way over my head but if the hoses arnt leaking, and there is no vacuum lines in the cabin to make this noise, id suggest, and its the only thing i can think of since i dont know much bout turbos, is parking the car and reving the engine untill the noise comes and listening in the engine bay where its coming from, atleast what general area so you know where to look..

not a bad idea, just use the throttle and try to find where its coming from

Not as easy as that, as there's no load on the engine.

Zappys here: Put the car on stands and put it in 5th gear and slightly put load on the engine with the hand brake..Mr Ninja stated that the BOV (or that vicinity on the hot pipe) sounded like it was leaking (4psi), ve tightened it up and ill give it a whirl...
