Mazda 323 Series 3 Headlights (Disassembled!)

Hi peeps,

Today I was pulling apart the old broken headlight casings to test fit wirings for HID installations (using oem wiring from other broken headlights to make a oem looking HID kit, not cutting of the backing required like regular aftermarket HID kits). Found something very interesting on the low beam reflector.

Normal

Up

I'm guessing it is for the LHD markets to stop the little left side kick the Aussie headlights have. It actually has a little axle and a metal clip to hold it all in place once you have selected the desired point.

Also noted that is has a flat bar running accross the centre of the reflector. Whats it do?

And oops! Guess they get as hot as regular halogens.

Ryan

Were they 35W or 55W HIDs that melted? Either way, I should be able to survive itself.

I have a few left over looms from all the smashed headlight I've had lying around. So I thought I use then to make a new loom that doesn't require and cutting of plastic bits. But to go through the rubber plug like the oem loom. I will have to buy a new rubber plug in the same diameter (from Clark Rubber or alike) and put small holes in it for the wirings.

Currently the oem plug and loom as 3 wires/holes into the headlight casing. A positive for both globe and a shared earth. The new loom will have 4 wire/holes into the casing. A positive and a negitive for each globe.

I'll still have the original wiring looms, so it will be reversable if need be.

Cool! I'm going bigger in my hatch this time. 35w are great for low beams and 55 are ok for high beams but I'm wanting instant flashing with the output of hids. So my work begins with the stalk. Or installing leds in the reflector without ruining the light too much. 100w in the fog lights.

Looks like you found the shield for the beam cutoff? Once you have the Hid's in there moving them closer/further away from that will change the sharpness of the cutoff line & the colours you get in the cutoff.

Is the lense shared between the highs & lows?

The LHD would use a mirrored shield (ie. flipped horizontally), they have a matching right-side kick up to our left side one (it illuminates road signs primarily)

Yeah it is the shield for the cut off. Interesting that it has the adjustability to either have the left side kick off or adjust it to be totally flat.

Only the low beam has a lense. High beam just like like any normal reflector headlight.

Sorted out how to install the HID unit. Brought some 1 pin waterproof connector same as the HIDs, and some 18AWG red and black wires, and will ad a section into the middle between the ballast and the globes. This section will then have lengthened the wiring for inside the headligh housing and fit through the new rubber bung that will go into place. Pics to come when the parts arrive in the mail.
