Wakefield Park Open Track Day
Hi all,
Got this from FordXR6Turbo.com. Anyone interested in an AstinaGT Cruise and blat around the track? I'm in if I can get my wheel bearings fixed in time. ABC. Quote:

Yo, what's wrong with your wheel bearing? I had a chip in mine, easy fixed!
Little bit far for me to go, like to but....

I would love to come for a watch...
Don't think I can afford anything like a drive or passenger... Will let Aaron know in case he wants to give the Sport Hatch a run for it's money. Is anyone invited or just us? Cheers and Go Andy, Go Andy, Go Andy Go! |

It appears to be open slather and anyone is welcome. Don't know how much track time we'll get if there's a ****eload of people there but it is a weekday which will keep the numbers down a little.
Wheel bearings have a rhythmic warble to them - left side is worse than right - and need to be replaced STILL.

Andy,
I'm keen. I have some rear brake work to be done, new tyres and I think I need some new front shocks. Hopefully most of that is going to be looked at next week, so assuming nothing else goes wrong...very keen 8) Last time (and the only time) I was there was with some fordlaser.com people. There weren't many of us (maybe 8 cars??) and we did two groups - faster, not so fast. It was fun, we didn't really come across others out on the track much and everyone drove sensibly. Thanks for pointing this out. Regards, James |

Slight change of plans for anyone that is interested - Mark and possibly Aaron.
The track day on Thursday is a "no speed limit - cars only" day and will probably attract a ****eload of people. on Friday there is a "no speed limit - street cars and Go Karts" day which shouldn't have very many people or at least less than Thursday so that's when I'm going. We won't have to deal with all sorts of race car crap either I would think. The deal is cars get 20 minutes each hour with up to 15 cars on the track at each time. Scruitineering from 8am, track is open from 9am to 4pm. My wheel bearings are fixed and with a replacement steering tie rod end that we found the thread was fubar and a wheel alignment this morning I'm good to go. I have a mate who is bringing his 1600 rally car as well which should be fun. Plan to take lots of photos and videos on my camera so will let you all know how It all goes!

I won't be showing up as I have been asked to work (the first time they've rung me since first semester of uni began (feb) - always the way  ).
I went down last sunday for the 1/8th mile drags, however, so that some of the octane out of my system... (clocked a best of 10.4, @ 108kph with .8 reaction time) Cheers, James |

Grins all round. Had an absolutely awesome day. Our idea about going on the street car and go kart day was a good one. Apparently there were 63 sign ons for the thursday open track session!! On friday there were 3 street cars and about 12 go karts! Had the track all to ourselves and had a ball! Brakes weren't an issue and didn't have a hint of fade. There's only really three breaking points on the track so they didn't get an enormous workout - hardly any dust on the wheels! Tyres on the other hand are now looking decidedly worn. The left front tyre got a BIG workout though interestingly the outside tread block looks worn but not really badly but the next block section in is very heavily worn but tyres were 30,000 ks old anyway. Interesting things I found out..... my car has an alloy spare (already knew that but it surprised the other guys) The spare tyre is original and has never been put on (its even stuck to the sound deadening pad underneath it!) Front wheel drive cars can get very very sideways Third gear almost full throtle left hand corner at about 5500rpm then off the gas and into a tight right hander can get the back sliding nicely! (only did it once but still buzzing from 3/4 opposite lock experience which I pulled off I might add ) ABS can be a bit disconcerting on a racetrack at times. Off camber corners are a pain in the ass. And of course there are pics! Travelling past the camera near the end of the straight at 150-160km/h Mutherfu*ker off camber corner (very hard to get right) Working that left front wheel hard at the top of the circuit My mate with the Datsun 1600 rally car was smokin' the thing all round the track and because it has a locked diff and its a rally car (and he's a maniac) it was sideways all over the shop - until he lost all compression (rings are shot). Only other car there was a 99 WRX with a guy driving like a granny so I was the fastest car on the track! (stroke that ego). Would highly recommend it if you can afford the $110 for wakefield licence and track entry and wear on tyres. Strapped my digital camera to the rear view mirror and aimed it out the windscreen so got some awesome footage but its like 15meg so its a bit hard to post up anywhere.

I pumped mine up to 40 (cold) before I left Canberra and then adjusted them once we were there to about 36 (warm) because the track is at a different altitude and once the tyres are warm the air pressure is different too.
For track work its advisable to pump your tyres up a fair bit to stop the sidewalls from rolling excessively during cornering but there comes a point where you can't stop rolling entirely. Have you seen the pictures of V8 Supercars where the camera is on the side of the car looking at the tyres going around corners? scary stuff! Tyres with too low inflation can be a big problem. I did a defensive driving course and they showed us a skid mark from a falcon with tyres inflated at 25psi. There were two black lines from the sidewalls of the tyres and nothing in the middle. Went to the servo and pumped them up to 34 and did it again and there was a single thick black line about half the distance. More tyre in contact with the road = more friction = less stopping distance. Its the same type of equation with cornering.

Definately but can't afford it in the next couple of months - Sailing season has started and I'm madly saving to go to Thailand for the World Championships in March.
Need a new set of pads before I go again too. Just rock up on a Open Practice/No speed limit day and go crazy! Track days are listed on their website: www.wakefieldpark.com.au

As he said there was only a WRX and a (Escort?). What u want new wheels for on the track? You'll eat up your tyres. U interested in going UNV? Anyone else?

hey cool post a pic when its done. Make sure u get a receipt, and before u drive too far away from spring place make sure wheel alignment is all good and also that there is no clunking sounds when u go over speed humps etc. My struts were hitting something and had to get it adjusted.
Going to track whenever its a coolish day. I find our car goes a bit gutless in hot weather!
