Replacing Airbag wheel

Hey guys.

Just wondering how easy it is to replace the standard airbag steering wheel. Mine is getting all deteriorated around the top, kinda like its hardened in the sun now it's breaking apart.

I like the SP20 wheel, do i have to replace it with another airbag wheel? was looking at Mcwilly's thread about his new isota(?) wheel, very pretty.

would another option be to re-trim the wheel i got now?

*EDIT* Just found the post about removing airbag wheel with the PDF instructions, so prob no real need to post to this message. *EDIT*

What the monkey said

In a 1.8 they were optional - only standard on BA P3's i think - so you can get away with it.

You can get a Momo airbag wheel for BA in Japan (see traders section), but i'm not sure if the SP20 one plugs in to the BA, being a generation earlier

You need a bosskit for an aftermarket wheel, but only non-airbag ones.

Because airbag wheels have an airbag (duh) they have the boss mount in them, as they need the room to have the airbag inside it. Non-airbag aftermarket wheels are generally pretty flat and don't have the room, for a start

To run a normal wheel on a airbag car you need a special boss kit to
accomodate the different horn setup (Different plug). SRS Automotive
used to sell them EZZY had one but they closed so I dont know where
to get them from. If you find out let me know the little evil guy on my
shoulder keeps telling me to get one.

Only 1 wire for the horn on mine, and it's just a female blade plug more or less. So once you located that wire, i don't see you'd need a different hub. Got a pic tho?

Oh, and for the Vic people that want to engineer their aftermarket wheel, you'll need to get a collapsible boss kit too, not just the usual solid-sided ones

Yes the airbag wheel has no copper ring for the horn. Instead
it has this big rectangle with 3 plugs for airbag and horn that
spin around and would foul against a normal boss kit. You do
need the special boss that will have a hole to accomodate the
plug

My comments were about replacing with a non-airbag wheel.
