My new bits
Hey guys, a few of you already know, but I thought I'd make it official on whats being updated on my Astina. The want to race at jamboree this year has what has mainly brought this on...plus me being me, has to be the only bastard who is dumb enough to try something for the first time.
Anyway the list is:- - G series gearbox out of a KJ laser - Strethened Mazdaspeed Protege LSD fitted - Shafts modifed and all clearances and preloads set - Keywayed bearing races - Input shaft seal replaced - Drive shaft seals replaced - Transmission Oil cooler outlets. - Reco'd hybid LHS CV (BG outer and shaft, KJ inner) - KJ Intermediate shaft - Brand new KJ RHS complete CV - Jim Berry 4wd Pressure plate modifed to 2100lbs clamp - Jim Berry 5 puk Carbonics clutch plate - 4wd Flywheel machined - New thrust/throw-out bearing. I think that just about does it. Some pics Oh yeah, stay tuned...there IS more coming.

"Rob gets all gooey in anticipation"
Looks sweet mate, I will be pulling my Lantis LSD out of the car soon so it will be good to compare pics to your Protege LSD as the Lantis diff seems to be an unknown quantity and I am struggling to find out anything about it except that it is extremely rare and it works but I dont know how much it can take or where the weak spots are yet (I may need to break it first lol) The Gearbox casing says G561 but the sticker on it states nothing more than LZ. Its copped my abuse so far so that cant be a bad thing Good luck with your package Pete Last edited by boostedbatman; 15-07-2005 at 06:17 AM. |

In what way do you mean, "what'd I work out"? Basically I'm using KJ Laser drive shafts and the diff was a drop in affair.
Oh yeah. Look what else tuned up on the doorstep this morning.

Rupe - I'm running the standard Astina dash with the reed speed switch at the back of it. I'm guessing that's all it needs. The HKS turbo timer works with it, so yeah, should be fine.
Bearing mod cost - $0 Clutch plate, Pressure plate and fly cost me - $709 That clutch plate I forgot to mention is 235mm too. Twiggy - Yeah all the measurements are done, in comparison the KJ intermediate shaft is slightly longer than the BG one, but the Kj RHS shaft is slightly shorter than the BG one. So yeah, logic to me says its a goa'. Also, with the diff, have a good look at the pics I posted. Take note of the welds. Click the pics, they get bigger. hehe Nate - I'm hoping so!

I had it welded mate. Was a pain too, the welds kept cracking as it cooled. Eventually got them all sweet.

Twiggy - I have no idea what action the LSD is. It's not 1.5 or 2 because there is no separation plates around the pinion shaft. I asked the question once "how does the LSD work?" on the MSP forums and I got an anser of "F'n M". I later found that out to mean ****in Magic, and I can see why he gave me that answer. But on that note, everyone one I have spoke to on that forum says they work quite well, so, meh, I dunno.
Ryanne - Yes biatch, I'm going run more boost than you!! :P And I eat Jelly beans all day and night, not just for breakfast. hehehe Dogo - Yeah I do have an aftermarket ECU...so?? It's a LT8 to be exact. Also, yeah I hope very much to make it last!!

ok, stupid question:
re the starter motor and changing flyheel sizes- how does that work? as you've gone from a 215mm to a 235mm one...?

I know that with my 13B I was using a smaller fly wheel but that realy refered to the outer diamater of the contact area where the clutch plate met.

that makes sense cause a flywheel is bigger than 8 inches !!

Yeah, with the flys and starters....when you go to the G series box, the position of the starter motor if offset by the box itself to accomodate the larger flywheel.
As for the 235mm bit. That's purely the size of the contact surface of the clutch plate. In some cases the flywheel is remachined and the edge taken off to allow the size change of the clutch plate. Anyway! Well as of last night I drove the car. One word......DRAMAS. On friday night, everything went so well. I got the car to the point (by myself) where the engine was ready to take out. Removed all CV's etc etc. After having such a good run i was quite excited to get everything in....unitil I lined up the old RHS CV with the new one, only to find they were different lenghts. The new one was supposed to be shorter than the old one and in this case it was longer. Anyway, next mornining continued on and everything went smooth with getting the engine out, box off, clutch and fly off. While I was there I changed the rear main oil seal again and resealed the sump lining. Reassembled all and put the engine back in. Started connecting **** back up and found the selector arm joint at the box was hitting on the bolt that goes through the rear mount. As on the old box, the bolt extends through the nut by about 8-10mm. This is what the selector knuckle was hitting on. Well after much thinking of a way round it I came back to my first thought and that was to grind the ****er off! Well, as bad as this may seem, me removing the extra 7mm off the bolt gave me the room i needed to get full shifter movement without hitting anything While I was there I put in a spacer in the bushes on the selector join to get rid of that nasty sloppyness in the gear stick. Anyway, besides this, this was the only real problems....but the discovery of that the shaft was wrong, kinda took the wind out of my sails to get things finished asap. I now have to get a custom CV made up to mate with the intermediate joint i have. Until I get this shaft, I'm using a dodgey POS shaft that was made for the orginal owner of the box (before I made it LSD etc etc). Took it for a spin last night and Whoa! You can notice that lsd. Putting the power down out of roundabouts and exiting in the same lane in which you entered in awesome! I still have to set up the AVCR propperly, but yeah, have to let everything settle in before i go giving it too much....and the fact that I'm using a **** CV means i have to go easy until I get my custom one.
