CAMS and AASA licenses

Hi,

I've been a CAMS L2S boy all my life since i was 15 years old. But last year i didn't use it al that much. Seemed like a waste of money.

Anywayz, in an event that i am competing in next year. I require a AASA Club Racing license. So i'm thinking of chanin to it.

Just wondering what peoples past expriences are with both and what each one allows me to compete in.

Only ever had L2 CAMS licenses myself. No idea about AASA, I doubt too many people on here would have AASA licenses either.

Currently CAMS licenses are recognised at both CAMS & AASA sanctioned events. AASA license is only recognised at AASA events.

AASA license is $45 a year (club license), CAMS equivalent is $80 or $90 a year i think.

It depends what youre going to be doing, if you only plan on doing the events that require the AASA license, then grab that one - its cheaper! These L2S & Club licenses are a pay to receive thing, there arent any tests as such, and you dont need to maintain them - so you can just get them when you need them if you really want to.

If you want to progress up through the categories and competitions in the future then you will eventually need whats called a National license, this requires a couple of different tests, a medical, and also needs to be "maintained" by competing in certain types of events each year, and getting it signed off by the clerk of course.

OK, I'll ask.
I've only ever needed a CAMS licence L2S or L2NS. What is AASA and is it relevant in Victoria?

AASA is pretty much the same as CAMS. Motorsport insurance, licensing, etc.
Don't live in VIC so wouldn't know how it allpies to that state.

ok, really short run down, AASA is an initiative of a consortium of people, headed by the owner of QLD Raceway, (and now lakeside) John tetley... It is basically another CAMS, albiet without all the bull$hit, politics and backstabbing... Its motorsport, licensing, administration and insurance...

They both have the same english underwritter, and will both give you exactly the same coverage, AASA is especially proud to have the same underwritter, as it means cams don't have a leg to stand on in trying to find holes in their policy, cause its exactly the same as theirs....

Having said that, both are still quite different... Whereas CAMS turned around and said that lakeside would never ever hold a track licence again, cause it doesn't meet safety requirements, AASA have already approved one for it....

Yes, its aus wide, inc. victoria, and to the best of my knowledge, both vic and nsw have run rallies under AASA, and (i didn't tell you this) but at least one V8 supercar round has been approved to run under AASA! You heard it here first!

After all that, its still really depends on what you plan to do as to which license you get, and as much as i'd love to tell you all to tell cams to fu<k off, unless you plan to do nothing else except SAS at QLD Raceway, then the Cams one is still the way to go... That will change over the coming years, so keep an ear out...

And from what i've heard the CAMS licencing system is about to be re-structed anyway... Currently i hold a National Rally Licence, which allows me to compete in any rally in australia except for Rally Oz and Rally Canberra, which both hold international status... Nate holds a National Rally Navigator Only, which is essentially the same, same cost, paperwork etc. the only difference is he hasn't done observed driving tests, which as piss easy anyway...

hey Rod, I got my AASA license when i went to the track day at winton, and it seems like AASA is accepted at calder park aswell.

so yes it is somewhat relevant to VIC

Yep, i'm pretty sure that there's now 6 tracks which hold a AASA inc. lakeside...

Obivously its only lakeside and QR in QLD, so the rest are down south...

You also need clubs prepared to run events under the AASA scheme. My chief concern with Calder is that the front straight is used for both circuit and drag racing. So the front straight is perminantly contaminated by drag racing traction compounds that turns greasy when wet. On a damp day you risk seroius concrete infection when exiting the last turn.

Yep, Winton & Calder in Victoria, Adelaide International Raceway in SA, and Wakefield Park in NSW

Ive had a lot of experience with CAMS, and now AASA over the last 2 years, and I can tell you that AASA has run rings around CAMS with their service and pricing!
