Where to get a BPT 1.8 engine ?

Hi,
I'm very interesting in doing an engine swap. Currently i've got a BP 1.8 engine and i want a 1.8 BPT engine (ofcourse.. )
But these engines are really hard to get!
When I looked at this forum, it doesn't seem to be a problem for you guys.
I live in the netherlands (little country in Europe, west of germany, north of france) and for as far as i know, nobody has done this swap on a BA.
So there isn't much information available in my country.
And there aren't much 323 GTX cars for sale either..
And on the "car graveyards" (dont know the exact english word for it) aren't any 323 GTX cars. There are some 1.6 turbo engines for sale, but of course i want a 1.8 (if i'm doing a swap, i want to do it right )

So my question to you guys...
Where the f*ck did you get your engines ? :P
Did you buy a 2nd hand 323 GTX and ripped everything from it? Or were you just lucky and did you ran into a 2nd hand engine? Or is there a huge store over there who sales these things?
And what about the age and KM's (or miles)? Did you all buy engines from about 1991 with 165.000 KM? Or newer engines? Because all of the engines here are like that... a lot of KM's
Hope you guys can help me with some information...

Oh and one little question at last, in the sticky about the engine conversion, the prices there... USD or asutralian dollars?

Thanx!
Greetz,
Jeffrey

Thanx, nice one!
They got some engines there..

Brings up the following question...
What are the differences between a GTX engine (according to the site 180hp) and a GTR engine (according to the site 235hp) ??

If anyone has some more sites, or wants to arrange the whole thing for me let me know!

A search in google will give you all the answers. The GTR was the full on
rally meant car with enhancements to the motor and drivetrain. Having
said that the motor is 12 years old to find a good one is almost impossible
and to be honest the money could be spent on a GTX with current technology
giving a same/better package that is reconditioned.

Ok i understand.
So the GTR engines are a lot older.
Well, than i'll go for a GTX package and upgrade it myself. Much more fun if the upgrade goes in steps instead of one huge change. Than i'll get to know better where my money has gone to

No not older, same age as the GTX motors.

What I think Mal is saying is that due to the age of all the engines, it's wise to do a rebuild....and with a GTR engine, it's not worth the extra money you pay to get one, only to rebuild it. You can save thousands buying a GTX engine, and spening the money you would have paid to get a GTR engine, and rebuilding it up to the GTR spec.

That way you have a fresh engine, for the same price as a used GTR one.

Yes thats what I meant. What was state of the art back then eg sodium filled
valves can be replicated now by use of standard valves with HPC coating etc.
If a GTR motor fell in my hands I wouldn't say no but I wouldn't spend almost
$5k for one against buying a GTX motor and spending $4k on rebuilding it with
a new turbo and new pistons and other uprated products.

I hear you. For a guy overseas it is probably the best option.
For me the $875 GTX motor less the $500 I sold my motor for, cant be beat.
When I rebuild my motor next year I want to upgrade to a MX5 99 BP4W
head with B6T rods and forged pistons. Also custom intake and exhaust manifolds.
Hopefully get a reliable GTR+ performance with the VF12 turbo I will install very
shortly.

I received a mail back from this guy who sales the engines. This is what he said:
Quote:
GTR has bigger turbo and MUCH better internals. It was built specifically for rallying so is VERY strong. All BPT are 4WD but we get a LSD FWD gearbox which can be fitted to make them FWD .
Freight to Holland is $450 and takes around 5 weeks by sea. By air is CRAZY price! GTX started in 1989 and went to 1994 while GTR started in 1991 and went to 1994. Both can be fitted to your car. Kilometres are around 70 to 100,000kms but all are checked to be in good running order in Japan before sending to me. They have a three month warranty.
Payment can be made by funds transfer to Commonwealth Bank of Australia, St Agnes branch. BSB is 065149 account 1003 7513
But the theory about getting a GTX engine, and rebuilding it like a GTR is a great option Because I don't want this car for just another, let's say, 80.000km but much longer. Else the money won't be worth it.
Can you guys give me a list with posible upgrades for the GTX engine to get it over 200hp ? So i can give it to my tuning specialist (who's gonna do most work for me, as i can't do it myself ) so we can check the total costs togheter.
Hope you guys can helpe me, cause if all of this works out, i'll be the first one in the netherlands with a turbo-charged 323F BA
And on advice of my tuning specialist i'm gonna get myself a half-cut, it will save me a lot of money he said. Because all of the sensors and stuff are allready included and it takes less time (so less money) to connect all the wires if he can see the original setup of it.

that sounds like a pretty reasonable freight cost.
would it not be possible to fit the ba gearbox to the bpt engine?
i know there might be a strength issue, but could it be done?

It is best to keep your standard gearbox (BA or other) as it has the correct mounts, axles, wiring and clutch stuff already attached.

If you are looking at building a GTR like motor from a GTX then dont even
buy the GTX do as mentioned before and turbo your N/A motor. A set of
Wiseco forged pistons can be had for $420US. B6T rods can be got for $60AUS
GTX ecu, wiring harness, AFM, Injectors can all be bought. Finally you then
need to source a Turbo and custom manifold, turbo selection is totally up to
you can be Ball Bearing or normal bush all depends on how much you want to
spend. If you are considering that go over to Fordlaser.com there are heaps
of guys selling turbo parts for the BP1.8 its another australian site.

Hmm
half-cut is no option anymore. Well, at least not from another country. Shipping for a half-cut will be like $1800...
My tuning specialist told me my gearbox (which isn't in a very good condition anyway) isn't strong enough for this power.
So it will be a GTX with gearbox from your country, or maybe i'm lucky and run into a half-cut somewhere over here.

By the way, what does N/A mean? I only know it as Not Available, but i guess you guys mean something else with it.
