Do you need an external hard drive, or is it just more convenient? They run slower than internal drives, which are dirt cheap atm.

LOL ry, cheap shot

Mat, get a hard drive and enclosure like bourbs suggests. Only diff, go through umart (www.umart.com.au). They're normally the cheapest.

Would suggest 1TB samsung ($145) and whatever case you like the look of ($30-40). Or just buy a seagate 1TB FreeAgent ($195, ready to go).

lol .. i love the HDD wars ...i've been around PCs and the industry for longer than i care to say, and i've heard horror stories about every brand of HDD you care to mention ... my preference is Seagate first, followed by Samsung, then WD ... mind you, I have a mate in support who has had NO luck with Seagates, and my supervisor has just had a brand new Samsung kick its feet in the air ...

just go with a decent store ... don't store anything irreplaceable in one location ... remember, DVDs are reliable as an archive ... and go for broke

I just picked up a Buffalo 1TB external HDD from MYER. They were selling for $179. It's in an attractive case and performance is good. I was originally going to get a WD external, however the Buffalo was cheaper! I read somewhere that the Buffalo people use Samsung HDD's, however I can't find that website again.
