If you search FF Drift on youtube, there are a couple of guys that have the balls to get sideways on the approch to a corner. You do need to dab the handbrake to sustain good long drifts and perform switchbacks to change direction. But the reason I discourage it is that the ppl reading this have regular road cars and less than perfect reflexes. It's more than likely an untrained handbrake manouver will end in tears. So why bother when you can use weightshift to do the same thing? However, both methods have an ellement of risk though, as you need to be going atleast 50~60kph to drift properly (try doing that in a crircle! ).

After reading up more about it, the method I have used is called "Kansei".
This guy is doing illegal acts, but's it's crazy wet FWD drift style: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xO7tvymSjZc

Apart from the illegal aspects, that actually some pretty trick driving...

Two things that go in his favour though... choice of car, to get away with that you need high hp, AND high response, which rules out turbo... Honda the obvious choice, and secondly that car has a VERY tight lsd, or locked diff....

He'd be great on dirt!

Throw on some tyre shine hit a nice easy long bend at 80ks keep the power on and the rear wheels will loose their traction just keep it under controll and the power on to flip it out and COUNTER steer your heart out un till you grab traction again ,, The BA Hardtop i find likes let the rear end out often !!! its not a real drift as you cant power slide a FWD.

that is some nuts driving. yeah the BA hardtop likes to hang its arse out. i have ****ty tyres on the back, when its wet and i hit corners fast i have 2 options. 1. voluntary arse-sliding action. 2. involuntary arse-sliding. 1 is so much more fun, plus it STAYS ON THE ROAD

Im with davosust. The hardtop loves to let the back dance. I think its because its light.

Overflated rear tires and a 1/4 tank of pertrol or less makes the back nervous

:S i find when i have a full tank and low tyres it behaves more. to the point where i dropped the pressure in the back ones back when we had all that rain.

overinflated tyres = for me. esp when there's no fuel to weigh the back down.

hmm, after trying out the basic methods described on here chicypoos seemed to work the best (ps. locked private car park after midnight, not public open roads. i'm not insane). the car sheds too much speed if you use the handbrake, of course it may work better at faster speeds than i was doing (70+). chicypoos helped keep up the speed and seemed more controllable in a way. still spun it out a couple of times. DO NOT DO IT ON PUBLIC ROADS. i had a big safe empty carpark. on public roads expect some nice dints and a fine or two, and thats if you're lucky.

Good to hear you're having fun Dave. The handbrake still has it's place in SLOW drifting though, ie: fishtails and wicked 45 degree slow straight line drifts (ask Lordworm if you don't believe). I do prefer to use the Kansei weightshift method as it keeps both your hands free for car control.

It sounds like the BA is a good setup for this type of thing, I know it's very hard in my BJ, as it has some of the most nuetral>understeer imagineable, particulary the protegé!

I dont know if its the BA as such, or just the hardtop.

my line of thinking is that the hardtop is longer and has a lower amount of weight at the back for the size. thats why we can get it to slide out.

the handbrake has its uses but my tyres dont appreciate it that much

Save your handbrake and tyres for 180 hard turns when you're in Motorkhana events.

Incidentally, my KE is going to be an FF drift monster I think. I haven't been able to give it any anger since the new shocks went in (yeah yeah, you all know the story), but my mate Brendan did some half-decent attempts some time ago. Now only to put it back together...

if u wanna drift like a pro simply wait for an offshore wind, jump on your raft pull up anchor and let the good times roll.
