My mechanic charges me $250 to remove and replace a gearbox I personaly couldn't
be buggered sooner do a days OT and pay him than spend a day under the car with no hoist etc etc.

Okey. My knowledge isent the greatest but we just did it as part of my engine conversion.
Heres how we did it: The engine came out of the car The gearbox and housing came away from the engine The clutch came off The flywheel came off The flywheel got machined I got a new clutch made up (HD for me - this was actually done before this all started) The flappy metal cover thing (someone fix that up for me, i dont know what its called) was cleaned (We used fuel cause we had no degreaser) The flywheel went on the new clutch was attached to the engine the gearbox went back on the engine went back in the car. Changing a clutch is a big job and you will need to have all day and be fairly motivated. I dont know if taking the engine out is completly necessary but the gearbox does have to come off. When doing all this, make sure no oil gets near anything at all ever, esp. your clutch face plate. If oil gets in there it will slip cause its lubricated. Bad. Tools you will need: Set of sockets Crane / block and tackle / hoist Tourqe Wrench (needed - the bolts have to be done up to a certain level) Ratchet Repair Manual (go to super **** auto, they should have one, your looking for a 323 / laser one) If your not confident about all this, it is best to get a profesional to do it or get someone who knows what there doing to help. Your doing alot of major work and its easy for stuff to get broken. if you can get it up on a hoist you could probobly drop the gearbox down provided you take the cross member out. If im wrong anywhere, someone correct me. This is how it was done as best I can remember it on my car a few days ago. Cheers Hornet Last edited by Ian; 26-12-2005 at 11:40 PM. |

The engine doesn't have to come out but it does need to be braced as when you
take out the box you remove two mounting points.

It's also handy to have some sort of clutch alignment tool or getting the trans back on can be a bitch. It's a job I leave to the pros

deffinately doable in the backyard but without a hoist the job becomes a whole lot harder

You won't be able to do it by yourself, it's just too awkward.
But with the help of a mate you could do it. But if you can get it done for about $250 then it's worth it, trust me!
