eBay: buying mobile phones from OS

Hey all..

My phone has crapped itself and i need to replace it.. I am looking at buying a phone from an overseas seller and i need to know if the purchase will be subject to import taxes and duties when it hits australian shores?

Has anyone bought a phone from overseas?

Cheers

I got a V3 from OS, didnt get slugged the tax, but had to buy a charger to suit and had to get all the settings and stuff from my tel co.

Had dramas until I told the guy it was from OS, then he managed to send some extra setting s and stuff.

Legally it's a big no. 5 figure fines and criminal convictions (if the ACMA could be bothered charging you).
If someone came to me with an OS solution I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

My professional opinion.

Doesn't that only apply if the phone is not already approved for Australian use?

True. However the few Nokia models from OS I've dealt with for clients have been identical, same services in the software and same frequency options. Could have just been lucky tho..

At present I have three variants of the same caller ID Single Line Telephone card on my desk. There are small changes between the three variants so I will need to put a hammer through two of them as they will never meet Australian compliance.
Take DECT as another example, USA uses 1920-1930MHz and rest of world 1880-1900MHz the two don't mix but the handsets look identical in both markets.

As I said originally though you would be unlucky to be found out. I’m just being the voice of caution. It will probably be a warranty issue that gets you in the end.
