Shuddering
Hey guys,
Little problem has re-surfaced on my car. Usually when cold it starts shuddering, appears *randomly*, as in not same instance every time. Sometimes when I start it, it shudders then revs up high and is ok, other times just stopped (traffic lights for example), and the other day when I reversed out of a parking spot and put it in D, shuddered until for about 20 seconds. Any ideas? Fuel pump? P.S. I have had this before, but it disappeared for a while.

make sure no intake leaks after airflow meter but before throttlebody......and throttle body might need to be fully cleaned...

throttle body clean would be a good idea. Try and take out your idle sensor and clean that out as well. That can sometimes get gunk stuck to it and it plays up.

All cleaned and idle put a bit higher too, still did it this morning when I started her. Was watching the revs, dropped below 500 and shuddering bad, thats when I turned her off . But I tried again straight away was basically normal.

sounds like one of your cylinders isn't firing. Check your spark plugs and leads. Work your way back from there.

that or check whether u have water in ur leads...flooding the spark plug... it happened to me once.

New information to add to the diagnostic, I haven't gotten to spark plugs or anything but today on the highway cruising along at 90, took foot off accelerator, car went from about 2200-2500 revs to 1500 just suddenly, you could feel the car pulling back, went back up, down, up, down. Happened several times, even after I put my foot back on then off again.

What he said, it sounds like you've got issues and u aren't resolving them. You shouldn't be driving your car sometimes on 3 cylinders some times on 4. Very soon, about next tuesday you'll be posting things like i've got a piston sticking out of the block, is this bad? fix it before you drive any more.
Nothing worse then turning a $7.50 problem into a $2000 re-build.

Already been to one guys, all he did was clean out the throttle sensor and said get back to me... its the weekend now. I can't go until Monday. Didn't have time today after that episode on the highway. I only have to drive it for two 5 min stints tomorrow (work and back)... hopefully she'll last?

It'll take all of 3 seconds to remove your spark leads from each spark plug and figure out which one isn't working. I'm sure you can fix it yourself dude. You are deff heading for trouble the way u r going.

I appreciate all your help so far, but I'm getting conflicting messages here. So I should be able to fix this by changing a spark plug.
What should I be looking for of signs which one isn't working properly? (Not very technical savvy you see )

k, as a real rough guide, check spark by running the leads on the engine block and you shuold see sparks from each lead. If not, leads problem or earlier, if theres spark form all 4, then pull out all the plugs, most likely one is fouled, you should be able to see a difference, maybe gap is wrong or it's full of crap. You should also see either oill or water around the one which isn't working.
Real stupid idea, run the engine and pull out each lead in turn, most likely you'll be able to tell which one doesn't make a differnce, that is the one that's not firing now. Unfortunatly, the others will make it far worse and might cause problems. Your choice, engine running on 3 will cause problems, running on 2 might cause big issues. Just pull them all out with the engine off and try to visually identify the problem. If you wanna talk on phone pm me and i'll send you my mobile number and can try and talk u threw it. deff don't be driving on 3 cylinders dude. You are likely to kill your car.

I'll have a go tomorrow, I was doing a bit of a search and I need some proper tool to pull it out? Supercheap have all this + spark plugs? If it doesn't work out I'll PM you then.
This arvo (Shouldn't of been driving it seems now) - car was running fine, started normally, no dropping revs, so maybe it fires sometimes, maybe it doesn't? Cheers for your help!

you need a socket with a rubber seal inside so you don't damage the plug, its work bugger all, just make sure you get the right size.
supercheap will have the plugs, they may have to order in new leads, they didnt have them at the two near me.

Update to thread time! Well I chickened out because I couldn't find the tools I needed haha, so went to mechanic. He had a look and doesn't think its a cylinder not firing properly, because the car runs fine, its just when you start it its having a problem. He can't diagnose it because it's erratic, I haven't been able to re-produce the problem for him. Happens majority of mornings, but not every one of them, and only happens once a day if it does at all.
He listed a few things it could be, but he doesn't want to be putting new parts on then find out it doesn't work. Edit: Also said if it was a cylinder it shouldn't stall - does that if it doesn't start properly and I don't turn it off before then.
