how to tell what size my engine is

hello
i recently purchased an astina for my daughter, and the clutch is just about buggered.
so the guy i purchased it from has agreed to replace it. but he needs to know what size engine it has. 1.6 or 1.8
he told me to look on the block and there should be some letters and numbers that will indicate what size engine it is.
is that true. or is there some other way to tell.
keeping in mind the engine that is in it is not the original engine.
if anyone can help that would be great. thanks

It depends on the model. All Australian delivered BG and BA i4 engines are 1.8

look at the engine number. (under thermostat).
look at the gearbox case number. (near front mount).

the later being more important than engine number.

need to know VIN number, year of manufacture, car model etc to help you better.

did anyone read the full thing? his engine IS APPARENTLY NOT STANDARD
apparently there is a swap in there
so the engine number will be the only thing useful in this case
reading the engine number is the easiest way to find out what it is (and if it is a complete swap, ie different manufacturer not just a swapped for newer engine it is the only way)
how about you throw a pic up here and tell us what model it is as well

piglets posts indicate that he may have a BJI 323 Astina, in which there is a 1.6L & 1.8L

More info would help, as i read some of your post, and doesnt make sense what car you have ?

Cause your first post said you have a 1998 BA Astina here :

http://www.astinagt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17609

And in this post you say a 1998 BJ Astina, cause some cars came out with the 1.6litre, but dunno if its the same clutch as the 1.8litre .

http://www.astinagt.com/forums/showt...871#post256871

Got a picture of car/engine ? Incase like you wrote it mught not be the same as original engine.

By the look of its - chrome grill and fogs it should be a 1.8L with a engine code of FP but can't be positive.

Mind you I think if I am correct on my BJ history 1.6L and 1.8L ran almsot same gearbox F-series so in should have same clutch and if there are no wire issues and the engine runs right then it shoudl still have it's 1.8L but replaced. Simple as that. Swapped for 2nd hand unit etc. Not sure in QLD but in msot starte you do have to let the athorites know and engine swap along with engine numbers swap be done by law. As they will have the wrong information on there files.

Only a detailed BJ owner could tell by a engine by pic if it's 1.6- 1.8L but by the front end and packaged wheels looks like a BJ -series 1.

From the exterior photo's, im guessing its a 1.8L as they had the colour coded mirrors & door handles whereas the 1.6L were black..

Edit: Ninja'd by Noble!

did you read it all of it also? he is chasing a clutch. so how is only the engine number important?

if the car is standard, you can assume the gearbox will match the motor in OEM delivered state. but with a engine change, and little info given, anything is possible. since all 200mm and 225mm clutches bolt up to all Z, B, K and F series engines, information is needed about the gearbox also. as the gearbox fitted dictates the clutch required.

Nah it's not your fault. your just thinking somewhat logically.

Where as some of us proberly worked too long with F-whits and other types of off the boat fools put into hi places where they know nothing so you think basic first, and or why etc.
