Chris: 2.25" exhaust will be perfect, if you want to save money just go with crush bend.
A manual VS ute should be too much for you, it's lighter and has the better gearing for the highway. Off the line you should give him some curry though! |

I don't have any knowledge on the 1.8sohc soz, but I guess if you could pick up a BPT or a nice BPdohc for cheap and had some mates to help one weekend, you'd be in a good spot. But I'd say if you went to all that trouble the BPT would be money well spent. The 1.8dohc BPs go hard with some mods, I'm told they lack some low down torque compared to my engine, but then they redline at 7500rpm too...

yeah I can understand you wanting more power.
must be painful having been beaten by a stock 1.6 BJ lol all good I was suprised how mine went against yours, must be the driver :P easy and probably cheapest bang for your buck is a BPT transplant. other then that expensive work on the block and head. Rob

**** this thread is huge ... someone is a post whore ... gav cough gav
red line at 7000, limiter is 7600ish. as for the whole commy thing, the astina will hold them off the lights, but the commy has the in gear response, but who cares about straight lines when there are beautiful mountains all around us oh and last time i heard the ute is heavier than a sedan, and a sedan heavier than a wagon

Mazda autos classically can't handle high revs. Funnily enough they produce more torque at the wheels though...

complete the exhaust (ie header), get smaller wheels (less rotational weight = more whp) and remove weight from the car.

hit it plenty of times in my BG SP especially once my 2" sports exhaust went on, really opened it up. Shame the BJ's only go to about 6600rpm, only been there once from memory. Rob

alot comes down to your launch and gear changes, and how crap the other guy is at them. bends & twisties in the road help if you're racing commonwhores and the like
but off the line stock astinas technically should get wasted by nearly anything, especially the 1.6 corollas, swift gtis, astras, barina sris, my car just cant keep up. and just drivin other cars reinforces how gutless the astina is! but hey, its my car, and i love it all the same with the zorst things should pick up a bit though how u beat a statesman mike is a mystery to me, its a V8 FFS. |

Mcwilly - Just turbo it already!! lol I've said that I'd help/do the conversion for ya to save $$$.
Honestly dude, bang for buck is an expression that comes to mind for me. It's all pretty relative....little $$ = little bang (go). Bigger $$ = bigger bang (to an extent). You're at the point where you have to spend alot to get a little more. The only worthwhile mod I could see you doing by keeping it N/A is buying an aftermarket ECU. Even then you have to spend upwards of $1000 and you'll still have less power than a stock GTX convertion. My 2c.

yea ill have to leave it for a bit because im not earning enough to turbo it at the moment. i really need to learn how to launch because i normally play catch up which normally, works but wid commodores and falcons doesnt. yea i was suprised wid the 1.6, another example of **** take of on my behalf. :-(

James' and Rob's 1.6s have the benefit of very low gearing, 1st gear tops out at around 40kph or something crazy, which is why I believe the little 1.6s are peppy up to 80kph or so. But put them on the highway against the 1.8s and I don't think there'd be any arguing which car is faster...
