To be honest i couldnt tell the difference. the only thing which stood out was the price difference!

When i asked the Supercheap sales chick to get the ngk plugs for the sp20, they already had the ZFR5F-11 as being recommended for our cars.

I would say the 'too big' was referring to the end of the wrench that goes down in the engine to the plug - therefore if too big it wouldnt fit in the hole.

Im not sure if the ZFR code refers to specifically to Platinum spark plugs. I swear I saw something in the posts about not bothering to go for the Platinums and just sticking to the copper V- somethings.

Oh yeah. The other thing that the thread goes on about is that you should be using better fuel if you put these in. Im guessing the 97/98 RON stuff such as BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power.

I do all my basic maintainence.

So far I have:

Changed radiator, thermostat, a few hoses (top radiator hose, oil cooler hose, air intake hose), changed front disk rotors and sanded pads, changed oil tons of times, changed plugs, airfilter twice, bled brakes twice (suprising how easy it is to boil the fluid just a little bit), the two belts. I installed my stereo all myself too. I think that's it.

It's all very easy to do, the only thing I didn't do myself was the clutch, that was because I need my car and it would have taken me a few days. Oh and cam belt (didn't wanna stuff timing up.)

Rang up Mazda for the costs of the filter today and the parts guy said the service schedule had been revised to 100K or so... Called up service and sure enough, the fuel filter change has been moved to the 120K service.

I think this explains why Ryco haven't got a filter out for it yet as no many cars would be at that mileage yet...

I think I've got one last question for the gurus:
I will be getting the front discs machined in the next week or so, I remember reading somewhere that the pads should be changed when rotors are replaced or machine. Is this really the case?

The BJII SP20 in-tank fuel filter is the same as 1.8 BJI/II Astina/Protege in-tank fuel filter, which has been around since August 1998. I'd hazard a guess that there are thousands of BJ's having gone into the 200,000km range well having had need of a filter change by now...

At about 15-20K per year the number of people who would be getting up the KMs for the fuel filter replacement would be low, makes sense that Ryco haven't bothered until a time where a greater number of cars require them. Anyways, not something I need to worry about for another 40K yet!

Mazda quoted $560 to do the 120K server, including parts and labour.

ryco havn't got one as its a v. odd unit. it houses the fuel pump in it as well as the fuel level sender and the filter.

it has electronics through out

Kelpro to the best of my knowledge do a fuel filter for this car though - try asking REPCO as they can order most parts on request

Haven't got one yet... It will be available at the end of February according the Autobarn (who called their supplier, who then called Ryco), they didn't have a price for it though. I won't need one for another 40K so will look again in a 1 1/2 years or so.

Oh, and make sure you change your spark plugs one at a time otherwise...
You might forget the firing sequence.

Good thing about our cover mounted coil packs... You have to try to stuff it up.
