Not Happy - Engine replaced in my SP20

Hi Everyone,

I cant believe it but I currently have my 2002 Mazda SP20 Protege at the mechanic getting a reconditioned engine installed.
Been told there is serious problems with the Cranks and 3 engine mounts have broken... Also need the clutch replaced as well.

All up im forking out $6K for the engine, clutch kit and ofcourse the killer "labour"....

Not happy Jan
Just reached 100K on my car as well

I was told VICS did your engine in? How is it the crank is stuffed?

Yeah VICS, you rub it on your chest.

VICS - Variable Intake Charge System. Little butterflies - held in with sticky tape, blutac and hope - that have a very high chance of their screws letting go, causing them to go into your engine and damage the pistons, valves and plugs.

Damn!! $6k seems high for an engine replacement (even including labour)

Mark had his VICS damage repaired for under $3k. I dont think that he got a replacement engine but I dont think that SP20 engines are worth $3k either.

sucks to hear mate, i really know the feeling

the repairs to mine were $3300 including labour, in which they reconditioned the head, rebored number 3 bore, new valves and piston, new belts...

The car now runs VICS-less, and the car runs fine apart from the little power spike u get @ 5500rpm...

Cheers,
marc

6K - I did whole Bottom end -foggess - x-rayed and I can go on etc and that included labour. in and out cost me a little more for the microtech but it also included a recond and hi-flowed turbo on a F2T.

Your gettign RIppped sideways.

reocnditioned engine from B&M is only $2.3K last I checked for a FS plus approx max $800 installed and removed and tha'ts sydney prices

Ring B&M higgingbottom or similar engine reconditioners. I'm sure they ain't 4K now.

$6k is pretty steep. For that you'd want a microtech and tuning as well!

Just got off the phone from the mechanic....
I wont know till Tues roughly what extent is wrong with the engine...
its currently at a Recon Engine Mechanic who is inspecting to see if its just the bearings or if its going to be the crank....
Fingers crossed its the Bearings and will be re quoted...

You wouldn't consider just getting a replacement engine.

I would think that just dropping on a replacement engine would be a lot quicker/cheaper than:
- taking yours apart
- figuring out whats wrong
- replacing damaged parts
- putting it all back together

The thing is, if the mechanic has already started with the tear-down, he is going to charge Brad something for it, even if he goes with a replacement engine. Having said that, I reckon a low k replacement engine is a better option.

Ok,

Got her back after 1 month off the road.
Had a full engine Rebuild - Recon....
Mechanic showed me
3 engine mounts gone
Bearings gone...
The Crank was Crack...
and the Block was damaged as well.... so a 2nd hand engine was purchased
and had it recon'd...

Together with this had to get the clutch replaced as well.... and a full 100K service completed on the car....

She is purring like a beast now...
all came with a 2 year warranty....
got running oil in her for the next 600K's then need to get it flushed....
