300k's too much?
So I'm trying to find a cheap runabout car for my mum and I'm trying to convince her to get an mx5... Budget is around 5k.
Anyway, my question is.. is 300k's too much to be reliable in the 1.6l engines? |

like all b series engine. poorly maintained = death. well maintained = good. guess you gotta know the history of the car. for $5K you cannot be fussy though.

My Protege for example, clocked over to 212000k's the other day; still running fine. It is serviced every 5/10000k's and literally treated like a baby Of course this is not much of a comparison to 300k's but again as pointed out you really need to know the history of the car.

I personally wouldn't buy a car with 300k on it no matter what. Even if it is maintained, thats A LOT of wear on the engine. Unless i was buying it to fix and its really cheap thats a different story.

5k will get plenty of other daily drivers with much less km's. Why an mx-5?

Bets on because its a cute convertible.
300k puts a lot of wear on more than the engine. Bearings, suspension, transmission, bushings and plastics all deteriorate. I'd leave it alone, find a BJ hatch for $5k with a lot less km

haha this ^
I didn't think it was realistic, just thought I'd see what you guys thought. I know there's heaps of decent cars you can get for that but the mx5's are a little bit more "fun" |

Unless rust is a problem then $5k can go a long way to keep an older car running safely. I'm a little sad that my mother sold her old Volvo. It was unique and would still catch your eye today. All it needed was a 289 small block
