Question ? Fuel pump problem

Have recently been having troubles with my car (2001, Astina SP20, my avatar)

I have noticed that after driving for about 20mins on the motorway on my way to work the car sometimes has a sudden drop in power. I'll b cruising along at 90km/hr or so and all of a sudden there will be a drop in response from the throttle and depressing the pedal any more than 2-3 centimetres doesn't get any response from the engine.

If I stop at a traffic light and don't keep my foot on the accelerator the car will drop revs to nothing then stalls. There are no warning lights, until it drops to really low revs, then the battery warning light comes on just before it stalls.

I had the car serviced by ultratune early at 76,000km (next service due at 80,000km) which included flushing of all the fluids and new spark plugs. Didn't fix the problem. The mechanic then changes the fuel filter and some valves in the fuel line, this provided a noticeable increase in power but the sudden drops in power still persist

A friend of mine suggested there may be gunk in the fuel tank which has clogged up the fuel pump.

-Do you think this is the most likely cause of my cars problems?
-If so how much will it cost to buy a new fuel pump, and where can I get it from?
