03 SP20 Idling splutter and intermittent revving issues

Hello all,

My SP20 has been a little of beat recently. I've had an idling issue where every so often the car will jump or hiccup a little, it's not violent but its noticeable. The mechanic said at the last service I needed to clean the headers but said I could leave it for a while because it wasn't a serious issue if I didn't mind the strange idling.

Last week I started the car and there was no power, the car wasn't revving at all and I could hardly accelerate. The car was driving but felt like it was going to stall, when I pulled over and put it in neutral the car wanted to stall so badly but I just turned the engine off.

I got back in 5mins later and the car started perfectly and I drove it home where it is now, haven't driven it since.

I assume this is a fuel pump issue but I wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar issue and what the outcome was just before I take it off to spend heaps of cash.

Regards
James

Sounds like you have a dud coilpack, do you know if they've been changed?

I would also do a quick check to make sure that all of your vac hoses are still connected properly.

Also, check that there are no tears in the air intake pipe between the engine and the air box. It is common for them to split (these days at least ).

Otherwise, a busted coilpack would be next on my list too.

Thanks everyone,

Where could I source an appropriate coil pack. I don't think it's been changed, certainly not since I bought it.

Faulty hoses would be a dream. haha

Going to check it all this arvo

Hey there,

Had been having intermittent power issues lately (01 SP20) as well with a few ideas thrown at me like you've already quoted. The car would drive perfectly then all of a sudden sounded and drove like it was about to pass away. Someone brought up that it might be the cat has died which I never even dreamed of...... I've just been under the car and it's goneski to say the least with the guts of it all rattling around and every so often blocking the exhaust path etc..

Just one possibility???????

It is a possibility. The O2 sensors are either side of the cat and they have a direct influence on the performance of the engine. Replacing the cat will not be cheap but if it is already kaput, then it would be a good idea anyway. Hopefully it solves the issue.

mine started off like mooniewant a couple months ago, just a jump here and there, couldnt find the problem after changing parts and working on it for ages. on sunday i went to turn the car on and it wouldnt start, next day called lube mobile he started it first time, took it for a drive and was fine, worked on it for about 2hours took it for another drive and it jumped then died on him. its now been towed to his shop and he is working to find the problem (maybe the wireharness or something to do with the ECU).

there is no point taking it to a mechanic, as the jump does not happen all the time right ?
as they need to feel the jump to know what the problem is and are to lazy to go drive it till it happens. does the jump happen when the engine gets hot ? (like 30-45mins of driving?)
anyway when i get my car back i'll tell you what the problem was

Only the upper sensor (ie pre-cat) has any input into the ECU, the lower sensor is just 'along for the ride' and is only enabled for emissions control in the US. Thats why you can throw on headers on an AUSDM SP20 and not get a CEL.

A dead cat shouldn't have any impact, unless somehow it's blocked up.

Yeah I've taken to carrying my spare coils with me

Keep meaning to do the EGR/IAC but they are right buggers to remove.
