Question about exhausts for my Protege
Hey guys,
In a couple of months time I would like to install a nice exhaust on my 02 Protege (BJ II Special Edition). I have been doing a little bit of research but I'm still not sure what I need to ask for or what will be the best option for me and I need some advice. What exhausts are best for these types of cars, a full exhaust or just a catback? What size should I go for? What prices am I roughly looking at? I want a nice, deep, throaty (WRX-like) sound and at the moment I like the look of 3" tips, but I wouldn't go any bigger than that. I came across 'Corksport exhausts' but I do not want to pay more for the shipping than the actual exhaust (which is the case for me) but I am after something similar. I have seen many videos on YouTube of Protege exhausts that I really like. Here are a few videos of exhausts that I like the look and sound of. i) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=k1rsRXUPfbk ii) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBKZV...eature=related iii) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCoNr...eature=related iv) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt2m-...eature=related Thanks in advance guys, Brad |

Lukey do really nice exhaust systems, they have sound files on their website so you can listen to different types of engines etc

JDM Mazdaspeed sound good on a BJ, AutoExes are good. Perrys are popular as well.

I will have a look into them aswell, if I can't get any of those specific exhausts, what would I ask for if I wanted a custom exhaust? Anyone know what would be more beneficial?

I had a full 2" custom catback exhaust with a Lukey muffler... Was one of the worst investments I ever made; far too much drone even with a resonator installed. I ended up switching to a Berklee muffler about 4 months later and don't regret it one bit - a bit of raspiness to the exhaust note and it really sounds heavenly at high RPM's.
Keep in mind my car has the 1.6L motor in it so of course the exhaust note will be different.

Turbos make the exhausts much quieter and less drone.
Will still have the same note tho

Here's mine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMoKOi9IGtI It's a full cutback system, Un-aware of what the tip is, its about 3" i would say. Hasn't got much of a drone (Does at about 2500rpm) is is somewhat quiet at 110, even quieter at 120 Cant wait to get a autoexe intake, aarons made me druel with his stock exhaust! |

So you guys reckon its not worth going from the headers? If not then I might just go with a catback system and have a 2.5" tip and I don't really care about drone, I'm quite used to it so that's not really a problem for me
Thanks Ben, love how that sounds too. But I want it louder Edit: Thanks for all the info guys! |

I'd say just go for a catback; Either 2" or 2.25" piping with a 2.5" tip

It all comes down to personal preference as to how loud you want the car to be, cat-back at say max 2.25" seems to be the way to go, and get a nice muffler thrown on for a little grumble.
Headers will yield you probably around 5-10hp, and that will also change the way the car sounds (well I have noticed it since installing the AutoExe headers)

those exhausts you linked are all way too loud... they have the deep sound sure, but in the end, they don't sound much different than a honda
I have friends who have those exhausts who are sick of the drone and loudness on the highway after years of owning them... plus they don't like the negative attention it brings.... for one thing, it'll probably fail the 90db limit the best deep sounding exhaust that's not obnoxious is the Racing Beat catback system, but since you don't want to go through the trouble of importing from the US, that's out of the question.... the JDM Autoexe and Mazdaspeed exhausts are just "axle back" mufflers... they do not change any of the piping so the performance gains are next to none best to go custom one option for you is to buy a bare generic Racing Beat muffler and have it shipped to you... after it's all said and done, it's probably around $200... quite worth it for a high quality straight through design muffler that produces a deep and smooth tone.... 2.5" and 3" options are available, but the 3" design is a hot seller and always sold out... you don't need the 3" one anyway... you'll end up losing power from the 3" version as you reduce scavenging/exhaust velocity compared to the 2.5" version... tips are also available from racing beat... they are stylish and blends in nicely with any mazda

Here is how mine sounds like (mind you there's a turbo in the way, but the sound level has remained the same after I replaced the downpipe with a larger one and fitted a high flow cat... before then it was actually quieter than non-turbo)
https://youtu.be/xsCAK7zQQxE the intake is actually louder than the exhaust: https://youtu.be/KFGOJa0BwNQ but, there are others here who have the same exhaust I do, except they don't have a turbo and fitted extractors and a small high flow cat instead (I have larger cats designed for rotaries), it makes the exhaust even louder more examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rm91j1hN7w no cat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeXzXz-oLP0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ6kaSd-yEg https://www.youtu.be/ON4M0WEsnh0?hd=1&t=10s that should give you an idea of what the quietest catback exhaust for our cars sounds like... anything else you see is louder... the magnaflow is probably as loud as you want to get before going to obnoxious levels

Thanks everyone and theMAN for that chunk of writing you are the man! Will probably end up going for a custom 2.25-2.5 catback and a nice tip. Anyone have any ideas on the prices I'm looking at?
