car burning oil
Pretty sure my astina is burning oil....checked for leaks but there's no drips etc so I've guessed aburning oil. In about 500km the oil goes from full to about 1/4 above low...what do u guys reckon the problem could be? I'm using a 10-w40 shell oil..do u think I should try a thicker oil? Mind u I have the bpt setup on my n/a block and has 205,000km on it.

Was it burning oil before the turbo was fitted?
If it wasn't then it maybe the bearings in the turbo. My old B6T used to drink at least 500 ml of oil per tank of fuel. |

Is it a new turbo? Only ask Cus it could be the seals internally either in to the compressor (easily seen if you take piping off straight after turbo, but unlikely) or in to the turbine (more likely, but a little harder to spot due to oil being burnt in the dump pipe)
Either way sorry to hear it |

oil too thin for a bp that old. 15W50 or 60 full syn. but thin oil might be highlighting another issue. ie worn oil rings or turbo bearings.

Are you getting any smoking out that back? Soot on the rear bumper?
Most likely its the turbo eating oil if you didn't have the issue before. Did it have any shaft play and how many km on it?

If you weren't burning oil pre-turbo I'd be looking at the changes you made before going up a weight.
If there's no smoke or soot it sounds like a leak somewhere. You could have a pressure leak on the oil feeds to the turbo? Smell anything burning when its hot? Run you hands everywhere that oil could leak from when its cold, even if its not obviously dripping. If its wet you've found your culprit

Another thing I just realized, if you have worn rings as Ryan said, you might have excessive blowby, pressurizing the crank case and then you either loosing oil through the breather in to the intake (or catch can?) or it's going out the front/rear seal. The rear seal leak isn't very visible (you have to look at the bell housing join) and the front one is a little tricky as well due to the gear directly I front of it.

check the simplest things first.... make sure the air filter is not dirty/obstructed, and the PCV valve works (do the rattle test)

Wow, strange. Must have been screwing with the pcv valve or something. Good to know its no longer hungry for oil.
