Car Reving High

I own a Mazda Astina 1997 Model 1.8l.

When I drive 100 on a straight rd the revs show 3000. Previously I owned a 1996 Astina 1.8 model and driving 100 showed around 2500 revs.

The only difference between the cars is that my current car has bad valve stem seals and smoking in the morning and I lose around a liter of oil for every 100 km.

Can anyone comment on my problem

I am no expert mind you; but I believe that RPM is more of a result of gearing than condition of engine. Has there been any mods / exchange of gearbox recently or by the previous owner? Have you changed rim and tyre recently? Also, if your engine is using that much oil, it's in serious need of some repairs. I have a 2.0 V6 and it revs (from memory) around 3500rpm at 110kph, so maybe your recollection is incorrect about your previous car only reving at 2000 @ 100kph.

could it be a difference of gearbox, G series vs. F series, i thought one difference between the two was a taller 5th gear in the g sesries. just a possibility but makes most sense to me.

Yep, that's it. The revs can't change - it's fixed. It's purely down to a differnet gearbox. Mazda changed them over in mid-1995 (build, not rego)

Haha... did you tend to speed?

My old Hyundai SCoupe used to rev at like 4000rpm on 100km in 5th gear, but she was old and wearing down, god love her!

My Honda sits on 3000rpm on 100km so I guess that's normal?!

Tony,

Generally, this over-estimation of speed is already built into the speedometer by the manufacturer. Even with a larger rim/tyre combo (about 2-3%), my speedometer says Im travelling about 3-4 km/h faster than a GPS speed reading.

Of course, a seriously larger rim/tyre combo would start to cause a problem, but by that stage its prolly illegally larger anyway.

Cheers.

yeah i read on a few places that some manufacturers do this, i adjusted myn bt the GPS, i was driving and my mate was next to me reading out the speeds and i just adjusted the needle accordingly so it says 55 when his gps was 60.

can be an electrical issue also.

my car shows 3,000rpm @ 100kph.
aaron's car shows 2,800rpm @ 100kph.

so either the speedo is wrong for the tacho is. either way different cars show different things.

Actually I take that back. I was driving today and made a point of looking at the rpm and at 100km in 5th gear it only revs 2500rpm. I guess that's pretty awesome for fuel economy!

Yep, it's primarily the different gearbox.

Are you sure my first Astina was made in late 1996 and my current is made late 1997 same car and same engine.

Are you sure that the two gear boxes were different or possible changed in the last 10 tears
