Hub nut torque?

Dave! Something else to add to the resource!

What's the correct torque for BA 1.8 Wheel Hub Nuts?

and don't just say something like 'lots'

Do it up until it strips and then back off 1/4 turn. Or 174-235 ft-lb.

Put a pipe on the end of your breaker bar to get more purchase, ABC (Andy) did break a breaker bar when removing the nuts to replace his wheel bearings.

A suppurb effort

Are you un-doing the part of the nut which gets punched into the driveshaft recess? Makes it easier, although enough torque will simply break this section of the nut. With my car, you can see/get to the nut with the wheels still on, so I cracked the driveshaft end nut with the car on the ground (so I didn't have to stop the hub/driveshaft from rotating) and then jacked the car up to finish the job.

As mentioned, longer pipe over a breaker bar is good for extra torque - try to to get a pipe too much larger in diameter than the bar or else it will tend to bend the breaker bar (as mine did *sigh*).

When replacing the CV boots on my BA2.0V6, I couldn't get the drive shaft out of the hub, even after removing the retaining nut. I must have missed something, because I just couldn't get the drive shaft out of the hub - wouldn't budge.

Ended up removing the whole hub/disc/driveshaft assy from the car (by removing drive shaft from gearbox) and replacing both the inboard and outboard boots at the same time. Had to remove / disassemble the inner cv joint first, to allow a new outer boot to be pushed all the way (from inboard to outboard) along the drive shaft, then reassemble/repack the inner boot, before sticking it all back into the car.

VERY messy - moly grease everywhere and lots of cleaning req'd to keep the grit out !!!

I had to use a breaker bar to get them off, and had to bounce on them quite a few times while someone stood very heavily on the brakes.

As for the spline from hub, i think i tapped them out of the hub with a screwdriver + hammer combo This was after i'd undone the ball joint at the bottom of the strut

My 5 Stud V6 Hubs have been sitting down at the mechanics for months waiting for them to try and seperate the hubs from the CV's. The Wreckers couldn't do it they gave me 1 1/2 axles with the hubs cause of it.

You can punch the lock out of the recess then visit your local tyre shop - they have have a rattle gun - they can loosen the nut no prob's with this gear (might want to think about taking the right sized socket with you...not great for std sockets though...)

Don't forget to moderately tighten the nut and reset the lock before a careful (easy) drive home....

thanx for the info guys........

1. i already broke a breaker bar.
2. i tried heating the nut on the end of the shafts.
3. i set up the breaker bar with the car still on the ground, and drove forward gently, while the end of a long scaffold pole was sitting on top of an axle stand........

4. i swore at it.
5. i kicked things.
6. i threw things at it.
7. does anyone know how to fix a dented wing???

might have to resort to taking it to a garage.......
