Advice needed on mods i want to make to my '94 BA

I, like a lot of other NA drivers on these boards, would like to squeeze out a bit more power from my current '94 BA.

Looking at getting extractors and a new exhaust and possibly a new clutch(car is stock atm)

Money isn't really an issue. What i need to know is:

1.)What type of gain(s)/advantages will i see if i get these mods? (ie. how much more power, fuel consumption more or less economical etc) And wtf are extractors (yes, it is a newb question

2.) Where and WHO in Sydney are the people to talk to??? (people who won't f*ck me over and do a dodgy job. Are there people who will fit me up with extractors/zorst + clutch?)

3.)How much will i be paying for the new exhaust + extractors (and clutch if i get it) and what are some brand names to mention to the people that will do the mods?

4.) IF i were to get a clutch too, performance/quality wise what is the best?

5.) And lastly, will NRMA chuck a **** at me and increase my premiums (full comprehensive atm) through the roof? Bloody insurance companies - have a feeling this'll increase the premium by a bit... - anyone know?

Thanks in advance, you guys rock and as a newcomer i'm certain i'll be inundated with a whole heap of info/advice - but what the heck! (the things we do for our cars hey)

useualy extractors and exhaust will increase ur fuel economy.....unless u have a heavy foot all the time. Extractors are a replacment for your standard exhaust outlet and have a better flower rate and volume which means they get more exhaust out quicker which increases power. A clutch may not make to much difference unless you producing decent power figures...i would put a heavy duty in if you intend on giving it a workout...ive got a standard clutch in my BG and it takes a bit of punshment without really worrying to much. As for the insurance side best thing to do would be to ring them up and get it straight from them just to be on the safe side

Most of the big insuranse companies are for the mom and pop bourgeois boresmobiles and don't allow for mods. Give them a call and ask but if they say no then that's exactly what they mean. I couldn't get insurance for a factory standard 280ZX from RACV or NRMA and I was 27 at the time with a perfect insurance record.

extractors = headers = manifold. the pipes that run directly off your engine to the rest of the exhaust

and daiken/exedy make a good clutch

a hi flowed cat may make a slight advantage in this situation too.. you wont have to cut up your stock exaust system if things go pear shaped

care to elaborate a bit more pr1mo? It sounds like an exhaust sound up but i'm not sure. How much in terms of performance gain and cost?

The exhaust is only as large as its smallest part.
Your extractors/headers/manifold will have four pipes that come down to two then one and out to the exhaust, each of these points is a collector. If the diameter of your pipe from the final collector on your extractors is say 2 1/2" and your exhaust is 2 1/4" but your catalytic converter is the standard 1 7/8" then you have a restriction and you won't reach the full potential of your mods.
A catalytic converter is a legal must but isn't cheap.

The *best* clutch you can get is a jim berry clutch... not cheap... but nothing is off the shelf, everything is custom made, and guaranteed never to slip...

He makes the clutches for some of the world's best race teams... both race and rally...

Brisbane Race Clutches.. look it up.. but like you said, only if money is no problem...

Magnaflow cats get more than a 100% markup on them, I paid $85 for mine, and it was another $10 to get it sent up from Sydaney. They are pure rip off at retail...

For insurance, I was with AAMI and I don't think they would even allow the suspension being upgraded. I think that was because my partner was under 25. Even so, I think only one type of modification is allowed for over 25's.

I switched to JustCars, and now paying a similar premium. They allow pretty much anything, but you have to tell them. Only issue I had with them was agreeing on the value of my car - they wanted the value I paid for it, but I knew I paid heaps less than the market value and I wanted higher cover, which I struggled to get out of them (my argument was 'so if someone gave me the car, does that make it uninsurable?'). A mate has made a claim through them and had absolutely no dramas.

But if you go too light then it can become a bit ferral to drive. Esp if you end-up with lots of power. I've learnt that leason 4.5kg is too light for 170kw atw without a LSD.
But yeah, it'll rev its little heart out

I'm with NRMA, they didnt charge me any extra for bigger wheels, lowered, intake and a few other things. Just as though its legal / within reason they usually dont really care what you do, but they'll only cover a certain dollar amount for the mods, unless you're insured for an agreed value.

i'm just about to change to just cars though, they're alot more mod friendly and their premium was actually cheaper. I tried shannons but their price was absolutely ridiculous

regarding #2, try a place called Hi-Tech mufflers, they're pretty reknowned.
try to get off-the-shelf extractors like pacemakers or genie (not sure what brands available for the BA), because if you get an set of custom extractors (if not well designed or fabricated) it possibly could bring down your whole exhaust system, where as a custom cat back exhaust isnt as crucial to your powerband and they're easy to fabricate.

any dummy can make a cat back but extractors are like the "brain" of your exhaust system so make sure they're good ones.
Its not uncommon that people have actually lost power from getting custom exhausts made, I feel most of that would be attributed to half assed extractors
