Nate in the ARC

Hey all, just thought i would start a thread up for anyone that is interested in keeping up to date with everything im doing in the Australian Rally Championship this year. I will be navigating in a 2003 Impreza RS at 4 rounds of the championship (canberra / queensland / coffs harbour / south australia). Your probably wont see me on tv as we havent paid the $10000 tv rights to channel 10, but you will probably see our names come up in the time card from time to time.

you can keep up to date with our progress with live updates at www.rally.com.au (look for cameron sluce / nathan long).

if anyone is interested in coming to any of the rallies contact me via PM and i will try to arrange you crew passes.

Cheers
Nate

Day 1 wrap-up!

Woah! what a day. heat one has been run and won by simon evans in the beautiful ex-aprc evo 9, with bates in second and raymond in 3rd (which was a gutsy effort considering he was having troubles with his boost controller) I was backing eli evans to win but he got to much air over a crest and completely missed the left hander after it, ending up in the trees. unfortunately the car will probably be a right-off but all the safety gear did its job. We had sheppard in the brand new evo 10 (by far the coolest car out there) directly in front of us, but a series of bad luck with flat tyres and mechanical failures ended his day, although he managed 3rd fastest in one stage.

As for cameron and myself we had a pretty consistant day. We did have one spin right on the speccie point so no doubt the video will be all over you tube tomorrow lol. The notes seemed to be on the money and the newy rebuilt shocks made all the difference. Cameron is certainly a gifted steerer and was a pleasure to nav for.

The organisers had problems with cattle on one of the stages so we ended up running the same 2 stages 3 times. both of these were fairly fast with lots of long straights and 90 degree corners, great if you were in a turbo, but not so good in our little rs impreza, so turbo boys really opened up a big gap which we were never going ot be able to match. we also ended up doing a shortened version of the afternoon stage (avoiding the moo moo's) which was tighter and the turbos didnt get such a big lead up. At the end of the days proceedings we had moved up from our starting position of 10th to finish heat one in 7th, a minute and a half quicker than the other non turbo, so we are wrapped! Afternoon service was easy with nothing to fix, but clean and check everything. all our tyres are pretty rooted but we will just plod along and see where tomorrow takes us.

sty tuned for more and thanks for your offers for help at rally Q, ill post something up about that later, for now its bed time

cheers
Nate

thanks for your help ryan! you saw the easy side of it as there was nothing to fix thankfully! the near roll wasnt to bad, we are trying a new type of intercom and it cuts out occassionally, unfortunently it did it right on a 4L Do not cut. i got the 4L out fine but cameron missed the do not cut, nosed the car into the corner and the left front went straight up on a bank, launching the car onto 2 wheels. Thankfully it landed safely and there was no damage!! anyway time to get pissed.

update later!!

I'd just like to say a personal congratulation to Nate on firstly the finish, and secondly the result. This was Nate's first event in a car other than with myself and to step up to the ARC straight away, and the added pressures that that brings is a credit to him.

Good luck with the rest of the year, and when I get one of those 3 diff'd farting machines I want you back!!!

arrrgghhh, so tired. got home at about 1:30. the windscreen wipers on brutus the landcruiser packed it in about 75 south of Balina, so we had to do the shoe lace trick the whole way home. Needless to say my arms are a bit sore this morning!!

haha ... yep but will you be able to afford me? haha jks. cheers man ... wouldnt have got this far without you driving to every bloody pacenoted rally in the country.

Day 2 Wrap up!

Sunday started ealry, pulling the car out of prac ferme at 7:00 in the morning, checked everything in the short service and headed out to blue tiles, a 30 kilometer stage near queanbeyan. first pass was a heap of fun, although we felt there was a lot more time to be made, we also had a small spin for which we renoted the corner!

Ryan made it just in time for second service, so we quickly showed him the ropes and checked over the car, then headed in again. with a massive overshoot about half way thru we felt the time was going to be dismal, but we managed to knock nearly 40 seconds off our first pass. must have been ryans amazing window cleaning in service

time for a quick bite to eat, check the car over again, and head into the famous castrol corner stage. Things were going well ... until. About 5 kilometers in there is a 90 dgree left with a big bank on the apex and a tree of the exit of the corner. I delivered the note, '4 left, do not cut, keep in on exit', but the intercom cut out right on the do not cut. All cameron got was 4L ... static ... tree on exit! we pitched into the corner and just picked up the bank with the front left, and went straight up on 2 wheels stunt driver style. you know things are going to get messy when you look out the drivers door window and all you can see is the road!! however thru camerons skills behind the wheel he somehow bought the car down on four wheels AND missed the tree ( beats me how! ). Now a little more wake we pressed on a set a time to attack for the second pass. Now with the finish line in site, nothing to gain and everything to lose, we turned the pace up to maximum and attacked. We an amazing pulled 27 seconds off our first attempt. Almost 2 seconds a kilometer, proving there is a lot more time to had out of the car yet.

Then we got pissed and fell over. the end

big thanks to everyone for there support messages (expect you bourbon!) and greg for everything up to now and the future. also to cameron for keeping the whole show on the road and delivering the result. we ended up 7th outright the first day and 10th outright on the second day, giving us 8th outright for the weekend and some valuable championship points. we were also the fastest non-turbo by a minute and we beat the other impreza RS by over 3 minutes!!!

stay tuned for pictures
