ABOUT: Coilover legalities in the ACT

well after hearing heaps of mates say they are legal and heaps say there not i decided to start pumping a few emails out and got this response:

Currently all Road Transport agencies in the States and Territories use a National Code of Practice (NCOP) for light vehicle construction and modification which can be found as Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB) No 14 which can be viewed and accessed at http://www.dotars.gov.au/roads/safet...tin/index.aspx

The use of coil over shocks is contained under Section LS, we are using the use of Coil Overs as a suspension strut or upright substitution, and therefore a modification to a vehicle.

In December 2006 the ACT conducted some market research with the regard to the use of Coil Over shocks with some suppliers and the engineering signatories and have come up with the following.

Until we can get clearer answer from all the states of the use of Coil Over, We are treating the use of Coil over suspension as a modification as such are requesting that an engineering report be submitted with the inspection of the modified vehicle.

Happy to discuss further should you require any further information or details.

so there you have it in ACT you need an engineering cert to have them...

ow and how funny is that this email was addressed to Kylie damn him and his not getting my name right...

cheers kyle hope this helps some ppl

Wouldn't you 'technically' need an engineering report for lowered springs anyway?

As springs are still a mod that could easily make a car lower than the minimum height or make it what they would deem 'unsafe' anyway.

You should check, Kylie () - it would be interesting to know if it'd be the same, or if as long as it's above legal height they don't care/need a cert.

here is the reply to the above asked question by dan:

The suspension requirements fall into a few special requirements;

Suspension travel.
Minimum bump stop clearance.
Ground Clearance.
Structure sound, fitment.

I guess the usual ones are like the ones you have asked.
Can I fit lowered springs ?, yes however they cannot be cut or heat affected, must be retained in the system when load is removed (can't fall out if jacked up) include structurally sound, Must retain 2/3 of manufactures bump stop clearance and can't be below the manufactures min ride height, can't be found below the 100mm ground clearance. Hopefully this is not too technical but all these things affects you vehicles handling.

Basically, if you fit one of the more common suspension replacement options available for your vehicle that is recommended by a retailer you should not have a problem, and no additional engineering reports should be required (except Coil Over as discussed). You can discuss with the retailer or ring our Vehicle Inspection Technical Standards (VITU) on 62077236 when you decide on the product or range. Please remember that the springs are only one component and may need to consider the whole suspension.

Ie: Pedders, Lovells, Koni, King Springs Whiteline etc etc. I have include some hyperlinks to some of the manufactures Q&A webpages that may help you.

I have found it refreshing to read a post by Skitz and actually be able to read and understand what he has written - obviously this means it was a cut and paste from the email, but all the same, it makes a HUGE difference to me whether I can read the post or not. Most of the time Skitz's posts are so badly spelt that I don't even read them because it makes me physcially ill to concentrate on the monitor and I end up with a migraine headache!

So that's why I generally don't bother reading any of Kylie's posts, coz it really does hurt but then again I have told him this and he doesn't care so meh...

Hey kitty,

If my post is important i will post it in the 'normal' english so as people can uderstand it. As this thread was ment as an information thread to hopefully help others its only logical that i would make sure it was readable.

That being said, if my other post are unreadable that most likely means there is nothing in them worth reading anyway.

cheers for the comment though kitty and have a good one and take care

skitz aka kyle
