gear shifter

Hey guys. Im looking to shorten my truck style gear shift in my BJ sp20. I recently pulled of my gear knob, the plastic surround and the gear shift boot. I noticed that there are two pieces to the shifter. I tried to pull and twist the top piece off but no luck. Question is has anybody removed it before and if they have how??? Thanks.

yanks have done this about 10 years ago... you need a torch to heat up the shifter (you really want to do this with it removed from the car, sans bushes), then it comes apart... after that, you'll need to thread the lower portion of the shifter... this is how mazda did it with the mazdaspeed familia

it only makes the appearance shorter, there is no mechanical advantage or shorter throws from it

Incorrect. High school geometry will show that the throw is shortened it just isn't the most effective way of doing it.
Unless you have the tools to thread the shaft then for the work required it's easier to buy a commercial short shifter.

the throw does not get shortened without lengthening the other end of the shifter, past the fulcrum.... simple physics

did you sleep through physics class?

The angles are the same if you shorten the top. I.E. +25deg to -25deg but the distance between where the gear knob stits in first to where it sits in second is reduced which IMO is the throw. You have to make a dramatic alteration in the height to make a noticeable change. Making the lower section, below the fulcrum, reduces the angles which also changes the throw while maintaining the height of the gear knob.
