oils, oils and more oils

Hey guys,

Engine is almost complete but i cannot decide which oil to use???

I have brought running in oil and will use that for the time being however i dont know what oil to use for the future and considering my engine was stuffed after using magnatec when i brought the car i want to make sure i use the right oil this time.

Im after a fully synthetic oil only but dont know what rating or what brand i should go for so i thought id ask around what people find is best.

By the way its a 97 BP engine

THANKS

15w-30 Valvoline XLD LO-VIS - never thought such thin oil would work so well.

Yeah Castrol Magnatec is known for clogging up in the motor.

I used Shell Helix Ultra - Fully synthetic - works really well cause it makes the car idle soft and smooth.

Recently switched over to Mobil 1 Tri-synthetic oil really pricey but works like a charm

Castrol Edge works alrite 0w-30 lol nar 2 thin.. i use shell helix ultra or plus or watever cant remember its 2 late. Depending on what car you drive and how you drive you might not even need fully synthetic or a $70 a bottle oil. if you drive hard go thinner so the engine gets quick startup protection blah blah.... all depends on the car and how you drive it eg, hard, normal..

what im after is an oil that is not going to break down and i only go hard sometimes not all the time so im looking at getting a low cold viscosity oil that also has a high viscosity hot temp.

Looking a pennzoil 5w-50???

I use Motul Turbolight 10W-40, it is a semi-synthetic and seems to work well. Its also cheaper than using full synthetic when i change it every 5000k's

Motul, Pentrite, or Caltex Havoline... in that order... Use a mineral or semi-synthetic (read :mineral), avoid using fully synthetic unless you're already running it, in which case stick to it as metal beds it different between the two....

If you've got the money, the fully synthetic Mobil one stuff (the $70 per bottle), is VERY good... but not value for money IMHO....

Run a search, this has been discussed before in great detail!!!

i use castrol magnatec 10w-40 or whatever it is, but i think i was caught by advertising....

it seems to do the job well, and every time i think about my oil i think that when i sell my car it will still be going awesomely cause ive been changing every 6000 with sweet oil!~

I use penrite HPR 15 which is a 15w - 40 I believe, but it may be 15w - 50.

But then again im running a FI engine, which needs a more viscous oil.

For Penrite?!?!? Not really dude... where do you shop?

But as far as value for an excellent oil goes, Caltex Havoline can't be beat... I see now you can even buy it in some Woolworths supermarkets...

I recommend any of valvoline range , because you know what I mean LOL

IMO good value

I use elf as it's what my engine builder tuner uses anyway.

but in my other cars I've been using pentrite well before they advertised them selves to everyone.

the SEMI- SYINTHETIC is excellent.

IMO if you change it regular semi sin is all you need. alot of advantages in mineral oils, full synthetic is great for high end push or often push. but if oyu find yourself driving in daily traffic and low lads like grandma going to the shops. Mineral oils have bene proven in the past to be better.

No fan of penzoil but then again never tried much.

but of most of the cheaper branded minerals, like shell helix, castrol GTX ??, valvoine.

mobil 1, hmm funy stuff it's good can't arguee but is it really that good? In recent test independants ones I've read form mags like street machine and Australian engineers and US version which was really good, they did a 3 month test on 10 corwn vics each major brands oils in each car from, gearbox to diff to engine to PS.
Not one brand came out on top. each bascily leveld each other out. In fact the only difference in the oils was when they passed the 7000miles or close to 10,000k's i think it is. This was the only time some of the oils started to show there strengths. Like mobil 1. but guess what the minerials were still good. by double that all the syn's had died and the minerals were worn - bad colour in some. the semi's were, were all in between.

IMO something I've always said it don't matter what oil, it only matters what condition it's in.
The freasher the oil the better.

I used to run mobil 1 fully synthetic im my engine which i was happy with until i was hasselled by a Penrite rep the other day to try there SIN 5 (5-60w) fully synthetic oil,he guarenteed i wouldnt go back to mobil hehe,so i thought why not give it ago, changed my oil today and i must say im pretty happy with the smoothness of the engine at idle and through the rev range, its a bit tappy when cold but when warmed up the engine is quiet as and purs.
So far im happy with it,but it comes at a price, $69.99.Just remember though as previously stated dont use any type of synthetic oil until the engine is fully run in.

Penrite as Astro Boy sugested is not expensive. It is also an Australian company that makes a damn good product.
The reason the old engine may have expired early could be due to the maintenance schedule or abuse by the previous owner. My guess would be that the engine was not serviced regularly and never saw an oil that cost more than $1 per litre or that didn't came out of the bottom of the chip frier (they told you the Magnatec story to sell the car).

Choose the brand and buy it from supercheap to save the extra few $$

BTW I've never had a problem with Penrite with either piston or rotor engines (something Mobil 1 can't match)

I've used nothing but Penrite in the Astina.

Thumbs up!

Use: Motul, Penrite or Caltex Havoline...
Avoid: Castrol Magnatec, Shell Helix, Penzoil, or come to think of it, any oil that requires advertising to sell the product...

Having said that i use castrol magnatec in the gearbox of the rally car, but for COMPLETELY different reasons... Unfortunately due to the type of diff i run, i can't use roil, my tried and trusted metal conditioner, so by using magnatec in the gearbox i can get away with a lighter grade... Despite marketting hype magnatec does have *some* coating properties, but not enough of a trade off to be using it in your engine...

If you want to be really sure your engine is getting the best protection i can't recommend this stuff highly enough:

I've got Royal Purple synthetic in my car atm, can't remember if it's 5W30 or 10W40, but I will see how good an oil it is when it comes out. I tried Magnatec once just for the hell of it, and it didn't cling to or polish the cams clean like Castol Formula R/Edge does. Magnatec also drains out in poor condition too...
