knock knock! who's there?

hey
I got a small problem that I hope someone can help me through either experience or knowledge. For starters, when the engine idles I can hear a clicking sound (I think they might be the injectors, or one of them) and as I rev the engine the clicking frequency increases ie clicks faster. Just wondering, if it is the fuel injectors, is this a problem or can it be a problem? Is it possible that it's the valves clicking?
My second problem is a little more serious i would think. When I rev the engine (in neutral) to about 3-4k revs per min, I hear a horibal knocking noise somewhere towards the rear of the engine and closer to the belts (engine area closest to driver). Could this be a loose timing belt? Could it be that the engine isn't timed properly? Or could it be anything else? sometimes it sounds like vicious gargling, and the fact that i say it's VICIOUS makes it sound like a knocking sound (maybe). If anyone has any idea please let me know! thanks guys.

Alex

Hmm, have a quick read through this and see if it's the same thing you are referring to: http://www.astinagt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2135

The clicking could either be injectors or tappets. Listen under the bonnet if the
sound comes from under the rocker cover its tappets if behind is the injectors.
get you dad to check the engine mount beside the belts & also the rear gearbox
mount it could be cracked from the accident and wasn't noticed.

I checked and it's definately injectors. Is it normal for them to tap? They're not too loud.. it's a soft clicking noise that you can barely hear after the bonnet goes down. ALL the mounts were broken in the accident, and so was the gearbox. I replaced the gearbox and ALL mounts so I can't see how it could be any of them.
I recently noticed a slight bend and chip in the air-conditioning pulley. Haven't hadf the time to look into it but I think that might be clicking at high revs. I really hope it is (easy fix). If anyone has more to say.. please do. I could do with the help, especially if its not what I suspect it is.
Thanks

Alex

Most likely your tappets ticking, just needs a couple of oil changes and a good hard rev up a mountain or something...

Do Astina's have harmonic balancer's?

Maybe when the belts were changed and it wasnt put back on.

Would you guys know what sort of stuff they look for when you go for roadworthy? Will they make a problem of the tapping? Or don't they start the engine at all?

They won't care as long as your car doesn't exceed the noise limit and the car isn't dropping parts or fluid. It's not a perceived safety issue :?

If that's the case.. I would hope my car would be registered before end of next week. Can't wait.
Oh and.. I might look like a dumbass but what exactly are tappets?

Tappets are the device that sits between the cam and the valve, in your engine they would more accurately be called lifters or HLAs' (Hydraulic Lifting Assemblies/Actuators, I can't exactly remember). They use oil pressure to maintain the correct spacing etc...
In older engines they have been known to rattle on start-up but they soon come to pressure and are quiet. As your car has been off the road for a while the'll just need a little time.
