hahahha my first head unit to install took me about 1hr...that was in a suzuki sierra and old school one and i didnt have wirecutters or solder or anything...so i used scissors and duct tape to do it

hahhahaaha...scissors to strip and cut wires is ****

I wont be doin any welding... I plan to strip the wires and just screw them into the relevant colours on the white thing in the photos i posted before!
I am gunna hack off the 'black boxes' on the new loom and just use the ends from that... i figure thats gunna be the easiest way!
After this i think i may catch the modding bug... i am sick of saving and not really spending my money on anything. I think the time has come, and i plan to try and do more stuff myself

For what it's worth the "right way" and the "wrong way" have both been described here. What you're going to be doing with those terminal blocks is about in the middle of the two and certainly nothing to stress about.

But I strongly strongly urge people who are doing an install of any sort of gear that requires wiring to at least use a mechanical joining method a little more relaible than twisting and taping. Over time these joints can become erratic and lead you to many hours of fault finding. They can at the worst cause weird electrical spiking, blown fuses and worst still short circuits in the wiring if the wrong side comes out.

Save it for the quick jobs when you know things will be re-done sooner rather than later.

At least the terminal block method is easy to trouble shoot and doesn't involve metres of sticky goop/tape in the dash

I've found it takes me about 2 hours to do an install with soldering, heatshirinking and very little taping. I cut down the looms so that they run in equal lengths, group front speakers, rear speakers and the power wiring all in seperate sub-bunches which are heatshrinked in groups.

I am slow and methodical with all this stuff though but I feel in general the results I get for the effort and well worth it, way better than the installs I did 10+ years ago.

Either way it's a good and mostly simple way to get started in modding your car and one of the most rewarding.

Installing a CD/MP3 player in a car which only had a radio preciously is s***. had to do that once, what a head ache. On modern cars its so so easy by comparison coz all you gotta do is the wiring and the rest slots in.Wiring is simple yr8 science and a bit of common sense, I enjoy helping mates do their sound. so rewarding in the end.

i meant previously. I installed an MP3 player in my old 626 which only had a radio. The difference in size of the two made life difficult coz i had to improvize and cut everything and it was a nightmare trying to stop the CD from skipping.

I just installed it...
When i turn the ignition on it powers up for a few seconds then cust out and restarts itself...

Well very strange...
I pulled it out and put it back in... same thing (cutting out)... stuffed round a bit not really doing anything and now it works sweet as - the ipod control is AWESOME

I just hope it doesnt start cutting out again.
Tooo late to get pics now and i am tired - took me around 3 and a half hours by the time i managed to 'fix' my problem.
Thanks for your input.
Pics to come tomorrow, along with the sub ones i promised ages ago.

OK I admit it, i am a total idiot...
All day yesterday i was thinking 'i must remember to get the cds out of the stacker before i disconnect it'... guess what? I finished installing the new one and kicked myself... I FORGOT

Would i be right in saying that if i get a car battery, the Sony HU, and the stacker i could connect the stacker as normal to the HU and then connect the power (ignition) cable to the + terminal and the Earth to the - terminal which would give me power to hit the eject button?
I want my f*ckin cds!

Yeah, it feels hell good knowing i did it myself

I also think i found out why it cut out... i dont think it operates if it is on more than a 30 degree angle... i had it out again this morning to do something else and put it back and it cut out again - i took it out, changed the angle a bit and its as good as gold again... just gotta hope it doesnt move about while i'm driving (dont think it will - seems a pretty snug fit) - if it does i'll just have to fix it in properly!

I put just put a clarion vrx576USB into my astina. The stock radio and eq was a 2 din setup ended up having to drill through one of the side mounting holes on the sleeve, through the plastic, countersink the hole in the sleeve and put the screws in from the inside of the sleeve for a really nice snug fit while still allowing the HU to slide in and out when i needed to remove it. I then picked up one of those 1 din dash pockets from lifestyle, so now my car has drink holders as well

Its so rewarding to do it all yourself. Congrats mil.

I would love some drink holders.. but apparently my car likes to use 1st 3rd and 5th every now and again

. Its impossible to hold a drink, shift, clutch and steer (especially reversing)

i found the trick for the BA is to put the HU in the lower DIN (perfect for using it by touch without letting go of the stick and sticking the cup holders in the top one. super cheap have these pull out ones, a bit crappy but they work for cans and small bottles

Not really keen on having drinks sitting above a $500 HU. Clearly thats why we allow people into our cars, to hold our drinks and shift for us when needed. (not from second to fifth please..happens too many times with auto drivers trying to shift).

Anyway need the spare slot for the DvD screen that is coming right
