Who's your CV/driveshaft workshop?
Hey guys n gals, after lasting 2+ years behind a turbo motor and god knows how long behind the original SOHC motor, my CVs are both starting to make noise. Left side goes clunk clunk clunk when putting power down around a left hand turn, and right one does pretty much the same thing but it sounds like it's clunking more or faster.
Anyway, who would you guys recommend to make me up some new driveshafts and CVs? I've seen the stuff on eBay for pretty cheap and i'm certain I can manage the job myself, but apart from Hart Transmissions who rebuilt my gearbox i'm at a loss as there are millions of CV people. Also, I'd go to Hart, but I'm sure I can get similar parts/work from another shop for much cheaper. They don't have to be in Brisbane, i'm willing to pay shipping as long as they're good. I just need a BP/BPT spline on one end and an Astina SP hub spline on the other. So tell me turbo peoples, whose shafts are you running? |

Depending on price, yeh stronger would be nice. Otherwise i'm just looking for a reputable drive train shop to buy replacements from. I've seen them on eBay, but they all seem to be for BG Astina 1.8L SOHC or BA Astina 1.8L DOHC. I've got a BPT motor, with Astina SP front hubs/brakes, all within a normal Astina (SOHC) chassis. Confuses the **** out of mechanics sometimes.

Your shafts would just be BG Astina DOHC ones then, wouldn't they? The splines into the hubs are the same between SOHC and DOHC, and assuming you've got a BG G series gearbox then there's no actual difference between what you've got and a normal SP, right?

When I got the car it had a BPT and an F gearbox. I blew that up quick smart and bought everything for my new G gearbox off Dan. I remember him giving me the layshaft, but i'm not sure if he gave me shafts/CVs. I then dropped all the parts and car to Hart Transmissions and they put it all together. They may have done the CVs and shafts in-house. Also I upgraded to the SP front hubs/brakes before the gearbox blew up, Hart actually installed them too at the same time as the gearbox. So, yeh, technically it should be exactly the same as any Astina SP (DOHC) CVs/shafts.
So now that I know I just need an Astina SP set of shafts/CVs, where should I get them from? Has anyone else even toughened up their BG running gear like this? Or does everyone with a BPT transplant just go through a set of drivetrain components every couple of years. Last edited by derb; 12-05-2011 at 12:43 PM. |

I don't have an open diff. I've got a helical LSD from mFactory in the USA. That's why I'm impressed they lasted about 2 years. I honestly don't know how old the CVs are as I don't know whether Hart put new ones in during the build, or just used 2nd hand one. I think they just lasted longer because I had flogged shocks for 18 months and barely gave it any thrashes during that period. Now that the coilovers are in all the going fast problems are starting to show up.

Yeah, when i did my gearbox conversion i used secondhand ones, and they lasted about 5 years, but that's probably only 20000kms or so. And with an open diff.

So pretty much just find the cheapest or closest shop and get some done up? Sounds like stock ones will last long enough for the cost.

Just for interests sake (and that i'll need some new cv's eventually), how much are both CV's worth & what would usually be the cost of getting them installed?

Yeah, i'd just get whatever they can supply. I think usually about $150 a side, but it was a while ago so can't remember exact cost. Labour was i think about half an hour each side.

I'm definitely going to change them myself and someone has suggested a place at Archerfield. So i'll give them a call next week.
Another question though, will the gearbox oil drain out once i remove the shafts and are there seals i should replace? |

the drivers side is 30 minutes.
the passenger side requires you do dump the fluid. so about an 60 minutes. if never done it before, double the times. |

Sounds good. Gearbox has done at least 25000km so time for an oil change anyway. My shopping list so far goes like this:-
New shafts New CVs New gearbox seals New wheel bearings About 3L of Redline ShockProof oil [Will call Hart Transmissions and see what they recommend since they built it] |

Just got news that a mate has started at Repco, so i'll be getting a nice discount on some of those driveshafts very soon. Guy owes me about $200, i told him to get me a driveshaft set and gearbox seals and call it even.
