What would you pay for an SP20, these days?
Hi,
My first post - I'd like to be in the 323 SP20 club This will be a suitable and affordable upgrade to my current '89 Honda Civic which while well maintained, is kind of falling apart. I've been looking around (in Melbourne) for a few weeks, and the price of SP20's varies wildly - looking for a manual hatch with minimal mods. So far, the SP20 prices go from under $6K - 10K, even more! Problem is, car insurers will only value these up to just over $8K, and rebook figures suggest a ~ $6K price. Obviously they are either very sought after cars, or there are lots of dreamers out there The last SP20 (2001 model) I test drove, with ~ 130K on the clock, only gave slightly better peformance and had worse handling than my Civic. It felt worn and was noisy to drive, the gearbox was very notchy. I'm hoping to find a better one than this! My next preferred car is an Impreza hatch (2002 - 2006), which costs more, but the stock 2.0L engine appears to be very sluggish. What would you pay for a SP20, especially the later 2002/2003 model? Thanks JB Last edited by Byrd; 01-08-2012 at 01:59 PM. |

Buy one around the 8 to10 and you should be fine, if you know about cars. The km will play a big part in the price too
And yes they are very sought after cars and redbook is just a guide Last edited by maz sp20; 01-08-2012 at 03:55 PM. |

First off welcome!
About 14 months ago when I got mine I paid $9000 for a 02 with 101k on the clock. So I would say between 8 and 10 for one under 150k Also they are a little loud on the road due to low profile tyres and because it's a hatch.. The sedans are quieter! |

Bought mine 13-14 months ago. Had same 110k's on the clock. Body/paint wasn't perfect. I paid $8k. Was advertised for 10... But no one refuses 8k cash flashed in your face. at the one market in syd was 8-14k Seems ATM the market has dropped a little. I would say somewhere from 7-12 now.

for $12-14K, I'd be buying a Mazda 3 neo with 50-100k on the clock.

Thanks all for your welcome and advice Tend to agree that a fair price is 6K for high km/2001 model to 9K for low km/2003 model. Anything above and they're deluded.
The SP20 hatch I most recently drove had aftermarket rims and even more lower profile tyres. It certainly didn't help with road noise, and made the car feel really sketchy. The clutch and gearbox also felt sub-par, and the front bumper had some worrysome hairline cracks all along ... I'm really looking forward to finding a "good" SP20 soon to feel the difference in handling. Also find it interesting that amount of people that don't sell their cars with roadworthy anymore. I mean fair enough, but when you keep hearing "yeh the mechanic said it should be pretty good for roadworthy" is not good enough for me ... this is for some of the more expensive SP20s I've enquired about. people are lazy and just demand high prices for no reason, the cheap ones are needing work probably, that said the hatch I bought off someone aparently had 2.5K worth of repairs to get it roadworthy... 4 hours of my time and $200 and it was registered... which goes both ways, its easy here in QLD to get a safety cert. it means nothing really...check out how cheap chris sold his! there are bargains to be had, just watch and wait. they've held their value well IMHO.
