engine is dead.
Hi all
As some of you know, my engine has died on the qld Xmas cruise. It ran out of oil then made squeaky noises and stuff. Now its getting worse each drive despite having new oil in there. It has started to affect my power output now, which it strangly enough wasent doing before. What I wana know is, if u run outa oil, is it possible it has ****ed the diff? cause otherwise everything sans the gearbox is going soon anyway. BPT conversion and stuff. Ive heard scary stories that thoes engines only ever last 3 months... any substance to them? |

Im not a gbox expert but i dont think the diff is fed engine oil, just the gearbox oil
i would stop driving the car if the engine is doing this |

considering that it has been run without oil for 2 weeks and then been flogged with no oil on the cruise there is a fair chance you have have donethe main bearings in the engine and from the sounds of it the other night possibly warped the pressure plate. the lifters are deffinately stuffed. the long and short of it is you should deffinately stop driving the car as dogo says because if you engine lets go there is a chance itwill take the gearbox with it and that is something you dont want to have to pay for

Gearbox and engine oil are completely separate.
i'd say you've done some terminal damage to your engine. If you *have* to drive it, put a thick oil in it and drive it smoothly and with a light throttle.

nah, that engine has two trips left in it, and its up the driveway into the garage then back down the driveway onto a trailer to be towed to wherever the BPT will be droped in.
For the record I didnt run it 2 weeks without oil :P 2 weeks ago was when I checked oil last and it was near full. |

its the bearings, the noise did kick in until the revs hit 3500rpm plus it needed to be under load also...

Only cars I know of with shared oil are the original Mini and the Rx-5 TQ 5 speed ran engine oil in the torque converter (too much stuffing around to get it from the gearbox past the clutch).

anyway, driving it the 15m required to get it into the garage was a lesson in agony. The engine moaned and groaned lots and stuff. Im not keen to repeat the excersize... it isent really important. I have the money for the conversion now, so im going ahead with it. Ive put the order down for the clutch to be made up and ill be having a look at the engine sometime within a week or so. If that checks out, i just need to talk to people about getting a weekend spare to help me drop it in. |
