I wasn't planning on buying a wrecked car, the only way I can do this and recover my money is to buy 2001-2002 BJII manual that I can on-sell in good condition as an auto.
The trick will be the timing, the longer I have the doner car the harder it will be to recover my money, so if peeps want to help, we're gonna have to work out a date, I think 4 of us could do it on a weekend. 2 people stripping each car simaltaneously. And then it's as simple as transplanting the goodies over to the other car. I want to do it this way so I have no headaches with ECUs and funny little changes between the 1.8 and 2.0 that we don't know about, and there are some! I know it means I will have a dodgy F series manual, but then sometime down the track we can get back to Nates idea of finding a wrecked SP20 and I can bags the gearbox and driveshafts and have strengthened for Forced Induction purposes... This is the only way I can see of doing this while minmising down time on the car with minimal potential for disaster, it will be a case of monkey see-monkey do. Gav. |

Does the SP20 use the same auto that Gav has?

I will suss that out, but I don't think it will knock me around too much. Although this is where the profit I make on selling an auto on the 2nd hand market is going to be lost: Stamp Duty, GST, and Engineers/Safety Certificates. But still buying the components necessary for a manual swap from a wreck will quickly approach $2000 by the time I find all the gear I want, and I will still have electronics issues with the wrong ECU... This will be a total loss as people will be as intersted in my used auto as they are in my pharken bumper....

I don't neccessarily agree with that, and have you also given thought to the fact that my ECU only has 1 EGO sensor and different mapping that will give hassles when plugged into an SP20... And most of all NO ABS controller either!
I'm as excited as anyone would be at the chance of aquiring a G sereis manual, but that can come later and won't really matter until I go FI or break the F series (which is unlikely NA)... Gav. |

sounds like fun. i may be able to help depending on the weekend, when i do my conversion im goin to do the auto to manual and put the jspec motor in 2 cos it has 21 more KW and i dont have to tell qld transport about chaning the engine then but i will most likely buy a half cut for a wreaked jspec from some where and do stuff to that(eg port, polish) while its sitting around waiting for me to get more money to do the swap...

I did an engine swap 10 years back on a Scoobydoo, I don't remember informing QLD transport of the new engine number either? But I think on a modern car like I will be buying as the doner vehicle, I would need to be upfront with everything. Anyone know what my obligations will be on the vehicle being sold off afterwards, I suspect the mechanic doing the Saftey Certificate can endorse the new auto in the car...

i dunno bout there - but i would think in this case it woudl be similar...
here from what i swaw your meant to get a mechanic to look over the change, and say yes thats fine due to the engine number or somethign like that?

Yeah that's why I thought it could be covered by a Safety Certificate. The mechanics that issue S.C.'s are policed much better than they used to be, so if I make a call to a place that does them, they may be able to tell me outright what I'm up for...
During my lunchtime walk tomorrow I will go past a garage and see what they say. Gav. |

you tell the machanic you swapped it for another engine of the same series etc and they open the engine bay go yes there is an engine ...yay... i'm excited.... tick tick tick... now piss off... take form to state dept. wait for 4 hours to get served pay and zoom zoom
