My comments were aimed at everyone talking smack. I'm not going to engage in a debate over how to wrap the cities and towns up in cotton wool to flood/disaster proof them, as for the most part it's a futile task. The QLD government will revise their flood zones over the coming months and years, and implement new design guidelines for buildings, roads and all other infrastructure. This is usually done at a council level, and the laws will be different from precinct to precinct... The current flood design guideline for residential developments is Q25+500mm. This may be revised to Q100+500mm? Who knows? The engineers in council will meet and discuss what steps need to be taken, and the greater community will be none the wiser, while sprouting off stupid Monday's Experts comments. In short, you don't meed to worry about it, as it's an ever evolving contingency plan, that will always continue to be revised as long as there are more disasters to come.

I have an idea for people, stop bickering about flood zones & how much time there was and actually go and help people who are affected... I have been trying to help all morning, have friends & work colleagues who have there houses go right under...

Im pretty farkin disappointed with the attitude of some people on here...

perhaps we should all check our facts first huh?
i am talking about the stupidity of the people who went on buying frenzies...not the prperty damage and loss of life. i am ashamed of the people up here in central queensland. all i have heard lately is "i cant get to blah blah blah i have to go the long way round" and down there you have a 13 year old boy sacrificing himself for his brother.

edit: i just reviewed my post and realised i hadnt mentioned the exact point of my post

Marc,
Its so sad to see this has happened so badly in Ipswich,

and yes the bickering on here as well as Facebook is just disgusting.
People need to wake up and realise that some people have lost everything, houses cars family friends they have nothing and people wanna joke about its its not a laughing matter.

Most of us in the Sunshine Coast have been affected nothing major though a few flooded roads, I spent a night away from home got flooded out couldn't get back, supermarkets are empty (we have enough stock but people are buying like crazy)

But it's no where near as bad as closer to the CBD.

Marc if you need anything PM.

and here is a sad photo for all you people out there.

Poor Poor Umart Milton

Crap, i was thinking Umart would go under, I hope to hell they moved out the majority of their stock to one of the other stores. When you consider the size of the 'shop' compared to the size of the building, it's obivous they had a HUGE warehouse in there.

well i congratulate those guys working non stop in this filth. ive been working to test/fix/upgrade peoples houses with my boss @ cost price and crawling though that slime with cane toads SUCKS. at least the places weve been to are reasonably clean, it would be another kettle of fish with places near the river where the water was moving fast. also anyone who knows people who were flooded, tell them to keep their fridges! (or ill take them!) they are sealed units, and unless you have one of those swanky lcd ones, should work after a freshwater hose out and a week sitting in the sun. also i accept no liability for explosions :P ( use an extension lead!)

If some dont know already, you can view aerial shots of Ipswich & Brisbane from www.nearmap.com , and up top you can view/compare shots that were taken on Thursday/Friday compared to June 2010, pretty shocking really!

Here's Ipswich CBD:
http://www.nearmap.com/?ll=-27.60738...k&nmd=20110113

And the imagery is soo good, here's a shot of the car on the concrete driveway @ home!!

haha its hilarious because we have used this for quoting solar jobs for ages... its been around almost as long as google maps. the difference is that these use pictures from planes rather than satellites. its great people are getting to know it exists. try the different views (north/south/east/west) thats pretty cool. i had a pic of me reversing out of the driveway for a bit until it was removed.

Nearmap = old news

I'm in the transport industry and dabble in GIS occasionally and we have been using it for years It gets updated more frequently than Google anyways.

I hope everyone is fine after the storms that went through this afternoon .....
