"warm and lively"... you mean over saturated and vivid? Nikons definitely looks more flat and washed out, however to me, the colours are more natural looking

it really depends on what kind of results you're after... for portraits, canons are great... for landscape, nikons do well

you can always adjust the color balance settings yourself of course, but there are still limitations of how much you can adjust

Just had a browse through JB HiFi DSLR deals section, this is one that I think offers a 1st time buyer best bang for buck:-

http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digit...era-sku-51853/

They also had a Nikon D3100 twin lense kit also for the same money. But you might as well grab the extra MP for the same cash.

And the 600D twin lense kit was $200 more.

Im going to throw a spanner in the works here and say: Why not a bulkier P&S like a G12 or newer G1X?

Yes I realise you cant change lens and the like, but it seems they can still perform the photography you want to achieve.

I myself purchased a G12 last year as I wanted to manually change settings, without the actual need to change lens'. I however also purchased a lensmate quick change adapter so that I could use the 52mm filters I had from my old p&s, and with the bonus of the adapter, I can use macro filters if need be

Yeah, but there are times where you desire either colour tone for certain work [if you're not into fiddling with white balance too much]. I've always considered Canon the Sports camera, Olympus the landscape/macro camera, and Nikon the Architectural/Theatre camera.

If you're an image noise pixel-peeper, there's no denying that Nikon and Pentax are the best you can get. Olympus have only just caught up to Canon - YAY!

No one really knows who Oly are using for their new 16MP sensor, but it screams Canon in it's rendering.
Although most think it's Sony sourced? Who knows, but Oly are getting sick of relying on Panasonic...

because they're not true substitutes to a DSLR... they're good as lightweight/discrete alternatives to a DSLR for DSLR owners who don't want to haul all their heavy gear with them

the G12, P7100, G1X, V1, etc are still limited in smaller lenses and much smaller image sensors... image quality still suffers because of this.... those Autoexe pics I took recently? They're all from my P7000, except for the braces all laying next to each other which was taken with my D90... looks decent, but the original sizes had tonnes of noise and because I shot them in raw, I was able to correct certain things to get those decent results... why did I pick the P7000 over the G12 when it came out? Because the image quality was slightly better, the zoom was more, and it didn't have an easier to break LCD screen... is it awesome and a good substitute to a DSLR? not by far! Is it a great point & shoot camera, sure!

Getting to the crux of it - that's about all of the criteria you've given us, and that you want a DSLR for no more than $1200. But if you get past the C vs N debate, there are other factors to consider - such as the crop/size of the OVF [this is where 60D $#!Ts on 600D...]. Some people [like me] don't like OVF, and go with cameras that use EVF instead. This is why I brought up flashes, as most people get hung up on the ISO noise and camera lenses. Dam, there's even cross point autofocus points and how many of them to consider, if you really get fussy [60D>600D again ].

Like Ryan said, maybe you should start your search for everything with a dual lens kit under your max spend and go from there. That's one way to narrow down the competition. Then you can get some hands on time at a brick and mortar store and choose what feels right. But there are only two camera companies known for being really vibrant and full of colour, right out of the box.

I didnt say they were substitutes to DSLR's, they are what I said they were, a bulkier P&S

In regards to image sensors, big woop, its a downfall being a Point & Shoot...

For what xeon8 has descrived, he wants to take photos of: "general landscape, photos for holidays and even cars" which the G12 does well, not as good as a DSLR, but close enough...

To be perfectly honest the small improvements the 600D has over the 550D I would pay the extra and at this price you would be silly not to buy it over the 550D.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Looks like I'm now heading down the 600D path. I was actually at JBHiFi yesterday, and had the opportunity to test out the 550D, 600D, 1100D (entry-level DSLR) and Nikon D3100. The 600D really stands out to me, however before I actually buy it, I'll wait until a sale or something, that way I can try and get it a little cheaper Yes, I know I'm a cheap @$$... hehe

I don't think you could beat the prices Kogan has for the 600D at the moment. $819 + shipping
I have become a big fan of the rotatable screen that the 600D has.

Will have to get a Australian charger though, as it comes with a US standard plug
