NSW Laws on performance mods

Hey I'm a NSW P plater and I was wondering what the rules are for us in regards to performance. I read on the RTA no changes to the engine that make it faster, but does that mean no CAI/Pod cause technically its not a direct mod to the engine itself? Also, would replacing the whole engine for say a BPT be illegal as well? Just some questions, if anyone could link me somewhere that clarifies it or knows themselves would be awesome. Cheers.

well the bpt would be illegal as P platers arent allowed to drive turbo cars, as for mods, i have a cold air intake, and a full engine back exhaust thats not in any way subtle wen im giving it some, i got pulled up 30kms over the speed limit, they did a few laps around the car and looked at everything, and i didnt get told anything about those. i dont know the exact regulations though.

I've had my INJEN system for a while now... I get some odd looks, but haven't been pulled up *yet*... *touch wood*

After having a quick read through the RTA website.... it points to a PDF file that states that any modification that does not produce more than 15% more power than the biggest engine available for your car is acceptable, as long as that all emissions and ADR requirements are met.

So after reading that... Yes you can modify under the bonnet, but you must comply to all emission and adr requirements. Any pod filter that is in the engine bay, and not in an enclosure chamber is considered illegal. At least 50% of all modified cars run pod filters illegally.

your P-plater = your ****ED

seruiously it's what it means

CAI - if airbox is fitted cops won't notice.

No turbos for you. You dont' want it either way.

New laws current p-plate restriction = buy something cheaplow on fuel and save your money, or blow it all on drugs.

I've been building fast P-plate freindly cars and so far it seems two of the owners are no licence and my fastest one well he killed two of his friends.
I don't blame me. I just told him how to get around the police.

The laws are one thing, getting caught is another.

1st rule - is NO LOWERING - this hurts all oyung p-=platers and it just goes pull me over. it's the 1st defeact they give you and it gives them ample rule to say open the bonnet.

lowering a car is all for looks does not mean **** on the street.
But your p-plater and attention is standard issue.

2nd rule is no loud exhuast or shinny bits. eg fancy wheels etc.

3rd rule is be veryvery good.

Then you can drive a EL or EF falcon or even Vr/ holden that can munch any SP20 or even a mild Tx-3 on the road. due to all the minor hidden modifications.

But you know what - P-plater caught speeding period - NO licence.

you have to love NSW laws. I've lost my licence - enough time to say, I ain't taking public transport again.

I might be being harsh but it's called reality.

Save your money. buy a cheap simple car - stay out of trouble. by time your off all p-plates you can then buy what you want and you might be able to afford it as well

From Geared.com: 'Legal ways to sex up your car' (written to apply in NSW).
