It will show up as 4GB, but only 3~3.2GB of it will be available (if it's anything like Vista 32bit). I'm on build 7000 for 64bit.

It may show 4gb in 32 bit, but it wont use it due to shortness of addressing space.

There isnt enough bits available.

Update:

I wasn't happy knowing the CPU on my spare PC wasn't near maxed out. So I got a reasonable deal on a good 2.4C2Q Intel Q6600 on eBay. The Windows User Performance Experience Index went from 5.3/6.0 to 7.1/6.0. Obviously W7 lifted the rev limiter on the UEPI this time around! So, I will see what this video card and RAM is like that I am getting, and then I can really test this W7 out finally.

Ill wind clocks back to stock to get a feel for the average users experience

My Q6600 is running very hot, well, 2 different temp proggies tell me it is! It's running all 4 cores around 60C or a bit more on idle (on an Intel DP965LT). When I loaded it up with Prime95, a couple of the cores went up to 90C! The hardware monitor in BIOS is telling me a much different story, so it could be just how these proggies work in W7. Unfortunately I never checked the temp on the E6420 as a benchmark for its the CPU or the software...

I've got a stock cooler on there with fresh Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. So i might just borrow one of the 120mm fans from work and stuff it in the back with another 80mm fan down in the front to help circulate the air. I can relocate the rear (and only) 92mm fan to the airguide over the CPU, so that should encourage a bit more airflow if that is the problem.

Check the heatsinks mounted properly sounds like a incorrect mount to me. What program are you using? Realtemp is the most accurate for our CPUs, to go into why is rather long.

I found out why the CPU was running so hot. The die on the stock cooler is not true! It is seriously concave, and the typical 1 or 2 grains of rice AC5 application doesn't even bridge the gap (see the piccy below).

After smearing about 2 grains of rice on each die (maybe a touch more), the AC5 bridges the gap and temps come down to 44-46C across the cores on idle and 78-80C on the ultimate heat stress test in Prime95. This is still way too hot, and I'm sure a stock cooler should perform better than this even if it is over 30C up here at night. Since I have a B3 stepping (crap...), I need to make sure the CPU stays under 61C on load. Whereas the G0 will happy soar to 71C on load, and will run cooler generally any other time anyhow...

Obviously the stock cooler needs to be lapped to make it true. But I have never come across this on an Intel (or any other) stock HSF before, ever! Since I've never lapped the die on an HSF before, I've just ordered a Zalman CNPS8700NT from Umart. This is perhaps the best top-down cooler I can fit in the space I have. Anyhow, the other heatpipe separated top-down designs would most likely not fit under the air-guide (which I cannot remove from this curse).

Hi Ice,

I've got my W7 PC fully up and running now, and so have had a chance to check out Real Temp. Real Temp tells me that my CPU temps are 5-10C lower than what HW Monitor and Core Temp are (and BIOS for that matter). Given you've said this is ithe most accurate temp proggie for a C2Q, I feel somewhat comforted. These temps seem to be quite a bit more realistic than what I have previously seen.

I will be trying out some games later today, and will let you all know how the compatibility is.

Gav.

EDIT: Google Chrome doesn't work properly in W7 64bit. Crysis works, but my PC goes into thermal shutdown and resets itself after only a few minutes because of the gay stock cooler. Some smilies in Windows Live Messenger leave frames behind and look a bit strange.
