Build me a PC!!!
For those of you who know your stuff, could you please recommend me a complete PC setup (bar speakers, mouse and keyboard).
I play games such as Battlefield, Call of Duty, GTA, Warcraft etc. so a decent graphics card is needed. Budget would be about $2000. Biggest bang for these bucks. Only certainty so far is Windows 7 - $299. Thank you. |

AMD+ATi system = good value for money. The new Phenom II quads and motherboards are great value. The new 5000 series ATi video cards are a bit exy, but 2X HD4870/90 video cards pack a lot of punch for the money. Asus and Gigabyte are popular brands for motherboards. I recently bought a Benq 24" 16:9 aspect monitor from Gocomp, so they are cheap and have accurate colours [image is a little soft compared to Samsung though].

Does this include the monitor as well? this can cost big bucks for a good quality big screen (I still call it a must for most war games when your target is far away and moving.)
Just go a REALLY basic computer box that has good cooling, good powersupply and not overly flashy. good cooling and good power is a must, but you don't want to pay for a name or flashy useless stuff. Best thing to do is maybe to buy a PCAuthority or similar magazine, they usually run comparisons on the strength of different components like graphics cards. +1 for the AMD option. I have always run Asus boards and AMD processors with great results. i run a Samsung 22" (or 20.. i forget, lawl) 16:9 LCD and its fantastic, but the positioning of the moniter connections are pretty ill-designed. but it works well. I payed 1100 all up for my computer build, and that included everything except some other minor things (like micr. office) its a basic build, but works well. for 2K you should be able to build a powerhouse. |

I don't trust PC magazine reviews, I've always noticed a high concentration of focused advertising for the product that just rated well immediately after the review. Clever marketing or something more? Anyhow, you can find a zillion reviews online, save your $7.95 I say...
Unless you want IPS or PVA, you can get a phat 24" monitor from around $300 onward. If you want ergonomic options [a stand that can raise and swivel...] you will find this option is bundled in with other things and you will be charged accordingly, finding yourself at the IPS/PVA monitor pricing almost, so you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. I sit here like a fat slob, and don't need a fancy base on my monitor, so I went the $300 option. I'm really happy with my Benq, but Samsung will always be my first choice. I recommend buying M$ Office in addition to the OS, so you will trouble free computing. 64bit is so much swifter, and you'd be crippling your hardware not to take advantage of it these days... Gav. |

Pretty much. That spot directly after/before/opposite the review is usually offered directly to the seller - it's a bit of a "you scratch my back, i'll scratch yours" scenario.

I got the same monitor, it's pretty good as far as I'm concerned. The only thing annoying is that it blinks for a while when you turn off the pc (ie. its input is cut off), so since my monitor is in my bedroom I have to turn the whole thing off when I go to bed. Apart from that it's great though.

Btw this is the family computer, not just mine. The parents are paying aswell hehe. We've currently got a 15" LCD and it's been fantastic. Wouldn't go bigger then a 20" widescreen i'd say. I'm going to check out MSY Ultimo (recommended to me by numerous people) in my uni holidays. Will be buying around January i'd day. My mum's a teacher so we will get MS Office 7 for a good price from the Gov't aswell as Norton Anti-virus. Last edited by RibZe; 22-10-2009 at 07:38 PM. |

ewww I hate storebought anti-virus software.
I've always just used Adaware + spybot + safe internet techniques, especially when using MSN, or going to popular websites. |

M$ rules states that OEM can only be sold on a fully assembled and installed pc.
It should not be sold with a hardware purchase eg hard drive It s not transferrable to a new PC. Upgrades are allowed but not to motherboard. Unless it fails. Then they might re activate if the feel like it. And no support from M$, it has to come from pc manufacturer. It is not re saleable unless all discs and such are sold with pc either. |

If you decide not to go down the AMD route you might want to have a look at the Core i5's, you won't need anything more for gaming. There's lots of good writeups on www.tomshardware.com/us
