Tell him that you have given a price that is more than reasonable and that it is up to him whether he wants the work done but the price is not going to change
If he wants you to do the work, then he will give it to you. If he just wants to get the other company to lower their price then he can go jump

To be quite honest, he was rude in his last email saying "In over 12 years of marketing and sales i have never come across a designer that wants full rate for a job that is not complete"
Correct, its not complete, because you want me to change it and re-make a whole new thing! I never said i wanted full rate, i wanted full rate for the thing i have completed. But i'm not prepared to start a new thing with out at least some money. I won't be replying to his email. he will pay if he wants me that bad. This guy is trying to get it for nothing. He's gone to the uni, thinking he can get it cheap (He has) but he's expecting it all for nothing and me just to say YES because I'm a "Poor uni student" This isn't my only work, graphic design for me at the moment is pocket money. As i said, I'm still getting something out of this, and thats experience and something for my portfolio. |

Tell him it's the price you agreed apon, or he can go elsewhere. Also state that he cannot pass any of your work onto another company, as that is a breach of copyright laws.
I agree I think he is now trying to lower the price by bluffing you. So bluff him back. |

Avoid talking to him until you have itemised all parts of the job so both of you can see the work you've been asked to do and your progress.
At best he is disorganised and needs you to be more orgainsed than he is... At worst he is trying to take advantage of a student and you need to cut your losses.

Ive dealt with similar crap to this when i first started my signage/design company.
I did a website for a friend of a friend and it didnt end up going online and he ditched the business and i ended up having to cut my losses. Ive found the key is always giving a quote outlining each seperate part and what each entails. Eg: Website- 4 pages, domain and hosting $whatever price. And get the client to sign it before proceeding. That way they are legally bound. It sucks dealing with d#@kheads like this guy, but it happens! Good luck with it all. |

This might make you feel slightly better!
As a fellow designer/Student I feel your pain! Make it clear that the agreed job was for the flyer, anything further than that will mean extra cost. If he doesn't like it he can go elsewhere and get a new design. Live and learn. In future, as Lachlan said, you need to clearly outline what the client's money is buying. Also, definately let him know the work you have created is under copywrite and he can't take it elsewhere. First thing I would do would be liase with the Uni, fill them in and I'm sure they will help you out if need be. |

Welcome to the world of design. Where everybody is a designer and no one values your skills.
He just sounds like a cock though.

This is not my first time working for someone. I've done 3 already this year, this is just the first douche that i've ever had. I really don't care either way, my portfolio got bigger out of this. I just say good luck to him trying to find a "Real" graphic designer for less than me. If he doesn't reply to my text i sent him today (Explaining to him again that the price is the price) by the end of the week, i will be telling the uni and letting them know the full story/ sending them copies of our emails. He most likely wont be able to use another student from my uni. I will be forwarding him the copyright laws also if i dont hear from him. |

I got simple advice for you .
Anyone in marketing is just a specialised sales persons. Some of them are brilliant but they don't think of the end guy. Its amazing they keep jobs but of course they do well at BULL -$HIT. Which is marketing. Most of them a cheats liars and don't worry garrentteed someone has hit them. I hate them for making me do things a million times and it's always the little guy at the end who gets blamed who can't pull of something to do something or make 1% better CRAP. I always suggest to think like them in a more different way. If they do and normally do work as 3rd party - marketing department or similar or contract off. If you know who your direclty working for. Nothing wrong with Giving them a Heads up on how much of "Ladies part" they are. One thing that is very comon and something you find gets worse when Companys get bigger. They delay some of the Payments like no tomorrow. It's pain in the rear. For me It's effectively me no paying. but I know my suppliers or anyone I hire, hate me for when my compnay gets late on pay. But it is somewhat common practice. The only thing I know to combat it or make it quicker is demanding money up front. - Deposit money - part payments. Or Making them Wait. One thing is into days world. Grow your skin Thick I mean Thick. Amount of morrons in marketing all trying to get New ideas or some advantage to look original be original or some crap. When all good people in real world knows. Product is mostly moved by Price, Quality and recomendation. Some are moved by marketing but it's funny how all the Great marketing ideas claim they moved said product when, real world figures one marketers never came up with. Say other wise? Now your making me rant on the bastards. Shoot the bastard |

I would also monitor said facebook page (and any publications if possible). As you will probably find he has a very similar design shortly created by someone else. At which point you will be able to start a whole new request for payment with a legal claim. And for this I'm sure the university will help you out with some cheap/free labour (my local university has a free legal aid service as a component of training their law students). As you gain experience you will also create a more comprehensive project kickoff process with a written contract and a list of caveats which will continue to grow exponentially as long as you are in business
