Revs Jerking from idle

Hi guys,

You know how it is, as soon as you have everything running well...something...happens. So the car has been off the road for a week or so.

Firstly had a problem starting the car, waited a few hours, tried again and it started, but acceleration was very jerky. Took it to the mechanic who swapped the spark plugs and said it improved heaps but I might want to change the leads as it's still a bit jerky, then went on holiday.

Anyway, fine it is not, stalling constantly at low revs. Runs fine when cold. But once it's up to temp it will keep stalling when coming out of idle. Managed to get it home by keeping the revs up while stopped (it seems to be ok at cruising speed, only coming out of idle). Feels like the engine coughs when I touch the throttle)

So I got a mobile mechanic to have a look, he thinks the spark is fine but electrical problem with one of the sensors (leads are fairly new and he thought they were fine, passed the spray bottle test no problem). So I cleaned contacts in all of the plugs, still coughing. Thought it wasn't as bad with the cover off the air box, so I swapped the air filter. Still no good, so I changed the MAF and TPS sensors. I don't think the problem is as severe, but still there.

Any other ideas for me guys? (I've looked through a bunch of old threads and think I've tried most of the suggestions there) When I bought the MAF the wrecker said there was no chance the MAF was the problem (because she has heaps out back and no-one ever buys them) and suggested it's probably the ECU.

Other things I thought could be the O2 sensors. Does anyone know where I can get them cheap? Seem pretty expensive from what I've seen.

PS, 96 BA 1.8 DOHC All Stock

It'll be the electronics in the distributor. They do fail over time, I've replaced one of two over the years.

Thanks Rupe. I'll head home at lunch and see what kind of distributor it is. Try and get a replacement today. Anyone know a good guide for changing it over?

Check the distributor cap and rotor button first. A bit of corrosion could be the cause.

Yep they look pretty nasty. Bought a new cap and rotor.

Had some trouble getting the rotor out it was pretty much glued in with some kind of old lube/grease. Ended up snapping the rotor trying to pry it off.

So I'll put the new parts in tonight. I'm guessing I just try to clean all the gunk off the trianglular centre section and slide the new rotor on. Am I supposed to lube this with something?
