maintenance.. i like having things running like clockwork...
but in the long run apparently they get gunked up and cause poor idle and other issues

you clean it to get around a rough idle problem...common problem on the US forums and this seems to fix it.
you can always disable EGR entirely and not worry about it but if you want to know how its done, theres how tos on mazdas247 |

if disabled what are pros and cons though and realistically is it better to have one or not?

When driving, especially when driving hard, the valve stays closed... disabling it and removing it will basically mean a removal of an emmissions control device, but no real improvement in power.... just gets rid of an annoyance (you'd never have to clean it again, for example)....tidies up the engine bay a touch as well as you can remove the EGR pipe if you so wish. Australian delivered BJ's don't care if its removed. You don't throw a CEL. the americans sort of have to keep it (or put something in to fool the ecu into thinking its opened) to prevent CEL.... but from an annoying light turning on point of view, its completely safe to disable the thing for us. |

when you say remove you mean unplug or totally take everything off?

I just disconnected mine as per Twilight's suggestion.
Mainly because I got Hurricane Headers and the recirculation piping is no longer used. but it still opened (whilst not connected to the header) and caused bad shuddering at take off... Now with it disconnected 'ELECTRICALLY' it stays closed and works great. been about 4-5 days now i think. |

I also didn't remove it but just disconnected it. This way the ECU doesn't
give me any crap. Because i now have other headers i welded that side shut and put a little flange on the EGR side. Greetz

One would be surprised how many cars I've seen with it disconnected.
It's so common its not funny. But on some cars if you do that it is a issue. The Mazda's ECU it's a ADD -on. Because Japan don't see it eg don't have them. But on some BMW MERc's and even Chev's. They have na extra sensor to say if it's flowing right. Or engine light comes on. I've done cleans because the ECU is reading too many faults. Carby spray and fill the manifold up with heaps of it flush it and change spark plugs 80% does the job - enoguh gets into it to remvoe the mild blockage. I've removed the unit usually 3 bolts - metal gasket spray in around - Compressed air clean out spray compressed air clean out. Replaced all and usually some large bit you disloged either goes in an fouls a plug up or the valve. Of course you can do the big one and remove all acid dip clean and well it's perfect like new. My favourite is. Change the pipe from the4 exahust manifold block it and feed it air where no one can see easily and feed it air from behind the airbox or filter. PS it can play with mixtures a bit but most modern ECU adjust for it and economy is better. Oh and to be safe IMO don't disconnect it visible. Mine is all visible working. Other wise EPA can question - why plugs are missing etc. |

it can be Per cylinder like Nitrus oxide or methanol etc. Or it can be on a Question of deliberate act to not have it working. It's why if you have aftermarket system oyu can have it hooked up to. They actually dont' mind it as long as you can show it works. If your running a import engine without it. All they care about in most cases is exhaust readings - new cat or two catrs fixes that and make sure your emiison lines to your carbon canister are all working. Even by pass the electric valves so they se direct line - they tick you pass . No fine or large one. Oh and if your running post 97 2 cats will be needed. even if it came with 1 only. They can be pricky bastards. |
