those examples sound like scenarios when you WOULD use the handbrake haha

sounds like some wiring problems?

Check to see if the wires to the handbrake are intact, could be that they are coming into contact with something else, or it could be the above suggestion

I think it might be a 'brake fluid low' issue

agree with above. That light will come on when the brake fluid is low.

Make sure you use fresh fluid - you'e not supposed to use brake fluid if the bottle has been opened before because of its reaction to air.

I used to have a nissan exa with the same problem and yeah it was cuz of what rupe and dogo are saying. My brake fluid bottle was leaking a little somewhere so I had to top it up every so often causing the brake fluid to become dirty I guess. The mechanic told me the floaty thing in the brake fluid bottle doesnt float correctly causing the light to go on and off at random times.

lol... might not be so technical...

this happened to a mate... after taking some of the trim off he found there was a 20c piece stuck near the sensor!

Yeah I had this happen to me as well - turned out to be a bit of aluminium foil from a thing of rolos that I dropped and never found.
