synchros

what can we do to beef up our synchros?

mine are cactus.

ross (gtxwgn) suggested maybe the double synchro from the GTR/X, but dunno if that'll fit. emailed PPG and they cant help, waiting on a reply from albin and PAR

and do we just replace the brass rings or the whole synchro?

How worn is it? Or you haven't really checked it yet, it just don't wanna change gear?

chipa i'm certain it's worn. all new forks and selector rods and it still wont go into gear - pretty much classic syncro poop'd. takes ages to get into gear etc.

damn about PAR. it's definately looking like just getting new baulk rings from spazda, and inspecting the sleave thingies at the same time to check them out.

nicer to my gearbox? NEVER!

it's not just worn/destroyed shifter bushes is it?

ie - is it actually crunching through that change pretty much every time?

My shifter bushes were naffed and I was having a hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd in a hurry, replacing the bushes not only made the shifting feel a whole lot nicer, it's now much much quicker into 2nd and I don't miss gears as often.

2nd/3rd gear chirps are too much fun to be ultra nice to the gearbox

nah shifter bushings are all mmk. at low rpm it changes fine, it's just a b!tch to change at high rpm.

with the twm shifter the base of the shifter has no bushings - it's a sealed bearing setup. at the gearbox end i have kartboy poly bushings for the stuff that it fixed to the gearbox and standard poop for the part that actually changes gears.

Andy: There are still 4 bushings in the shift arm knuckle at the gearbox that you have not touched. 2 of those are easy to replace, and the other two require some angle grinder action and a new bolt to make work. I did all 7 bushings on the TX3 and it's bloody great now!

Surely if you've had the box apart to replace forks etc you'd check the Synchro rings at the time as they're right in plain sight. The selector rings are a little more tricky, but still easy enough given the box woudl have been apart.....

yeah i did check the syncros and they looked fine to me, but looks can be deceiving.

i can try the 2 bushings that i know about on the gearbox, but i certainly dont know anything about 2 more that require grinder work - where the hell are they and what are they for?

There are 4 bushings at the gearbox on the shift knuckle. Only one bolt comes undone, that's the one you take off everytime you do your gearbox work. The other bolt that attaches the swivel bracket is punched and pressed shut. That's your 2 extra bushes that you can't get to without grind one end of the pressed bolt off and replacing with a new bolt and nut.

my 1st and 2nd gear syno's are now having a bit of worries when cold.
easy fix for me is to rev match my gear changes....works a treat now

not hard to get into gear anymore

Rev matching helps, but the ultimate when your syncros are that bad is double clutching, then you can change gear AS FAST AS YOU LIKE.

rev matching only helps the gear changes if you are double clutching, otherwise you're wasting your time and only doing it so the engine is the same speed as the box, ie doesnt help the gear changes.

but double clutching takes time, and takes a lot of practice to get quick at it

Besides, double clutching is only really efficient to use when down shifting, not up shifting. Especially when cruising I've always double clutched on downshifts, old habits from previous cars. Besides, I'd rather wear out the clutch than have a stuffed 2nd or 3rd gear synchro.
